butterfly release

Has anyone done a butterfly release or have been to a wedding were they done it?
And what did you think about it?

Re: butterfly release

i went to a wedding where the release was done and while it was beautiful, people didn't realize what was in the little packet and so i am sure some butterflies didn't not make it to the release part. they hung around for a while and we got some cool pics with them. it is pricey compared to flower petals and bird seed.

I don't like this and I'm sure the butterflies don't either. I don't think they like being 'kept' in a 'packet'. Just cruel to me. I would stick w/the bird seed..

I wanted to do one but there were so many variables.

1. The butterfly info I looked at said they usually are a bit dazed and confused when let out of their packages so some fall to the ground :(

Oh no!!
We are doing this! FH is adament about having butterflies. He is doing most of the research so I will be sure to tell him about it.
They are really expensive so I think we are only getting 2 dozen of them...for the bridal party and family members.

An exerpt from an article on www.naba.org that made me scared that I would be one of the few who had a bad experience. It sounds really beautiful but I am so paranoid already. Not saying it may not work for you just I am a big scardy puss.

many wedding planners now avoid butterflies at weddings because they not infrequently arrive dead, or half-dead. (See the recent article in the New York Times 'Festive Release of Butterflies Puts Trouble in the Air' on page F4 of the Sept. 15, 1998 edition). Even if alive, they often will soon die because they are released at the wrong time of year, or at the wrong locality to survive.

A neighbor of mine did a butterfly release. They must have had like 4 dozen or more butterflies. I wasn't there for the actual release, but it was done the way jenny2penny was going to do it, and it went off without a hitch. I have to say they are some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. I was considering doing a butterfly release at the end of my ceremony...but I was afraid to take the chance of it being too cold. You never know with the end of Sept.

I wanted them, but it was too cold in January... they would not have survived.
