Re: Butterfly release
yes, i didn't really like it. most of them died in the box and the groomsman really had to beat the bottom of the container to get the few left to flit out. pretty awful.

I haven't seen it, but I heard the same thing about the butterfly dying.

same thing happened at a wedding I had been too. While it's a lovely gesture, I can't see doing that to those butterflies. It's unnecessary, IMO.

Re: Butterfly release
I went to a wedding that had it, and at first I thought it was a cool idea but then I quickly changed my mind. First they handed out these little boxes before the ceremony and you didn't know what it was, so there I am holding it, and these little legs start sticking out. And let me tell you, I started to FREAK, and I am not that squeamish when it comes to bugs but for some reason it grossed me out, at the end of the cermony at release time, none of the butterflies would fly out of the box, and you were so busy watching your butterfly that you didn't see anything. AND also they were VERY tiny, not what I was expecting. In my opinion, it was a waste of money.

I have heard bad things about it- butterfly I mean..
Dove release.. I would be afraid they would poop... I saw it once and it was kind of gross.. They flew away and so high that I didnt get it.. JMO.. not to insult anyone
PLUS my priest told us that a marriage is covenent with god and your mate and that historically in biblical times if birds are present at a covenant it signifies that the covenant will be difficult and rocky.
I don't know if I believe any of that and i'm sorry to get religious but I don't wanna jynx anything.

Re: Butterfly release
I am doing the butterfly release and have done my research on it as well. Yes there are stories of the butterflies dying or not coming out of the box. A lot depends upon the weather. Butterfly releases should be done primarily in summer months when it is warm. Before releasing they have to be in temperature of 75 degrees or more for FOUR hours. If they are not, they will not be warm enough to fly. And, since they are shipped the night prior to the wedding, it is very important to have them warmed up before release. Another point I would like to make is that the painted lady butterflies are the smaller butterflies and are known not to do well for releases. But they are cheaper and a lot of brides opt to not to spend a lot of money on this. The monarch butterflies are bigger and do much better with releases. Individual releases - I would not recommend because as Az stated, you do not know how people will react to a little leg creeping out of a box. I am doing a mass release from a wicker basket so the butterflies will get plenty of air and heat until the time of the release. I think it is very different and pretty. So I pray mine works out. I am having an August wedding so I pray for wonderful weather. Hope that helps out.

Re: Butterfly release
I'm also doing a release and after speaking with the breeder, I felt very good about doing it. I've heard the horror stories and just hope that everything will go smoothly. FH and I will do a mass release of a dozen butterflies and just my immediate family will have individual butterflies to release. I'm also praying for a warm, sunny day.

Re: Butterfly release
I had planned on doing this as well.....but got such bad feedback from it so I decided against it. I am just afraid that we will open the box and they will fall to the floor.
If they live it would be so pretty.

WoW, that is the first time I am hearing this.
I am doing a Dove Ceremony and from what I was told by a Priest and a Pastor is that for many centuries the white dove has been an emblem of Peace, love and New Beginnings. As a sysmbolic gesture to seal your marriage vows you release two pure white doves. It symbolizes the newly wed couple setting off on their journey in life together, in harmony.
Also a lot of people do the release to remember loved ones who are no longer with them

definitely!
The wedding I went to was in the summer and they had the larger butterflies, and it was very warm out, but it still did not go well at all.
The groomsmen were running around trying to pick the little guys up off the ground. It was sad :(

Re: Butterfly release
How do you out all the butterflies in one box, don't they come in separate envelopes?

Re: Butterfly release
Don't think I'd ever do this. I'd be too worried about the welfare of the butterflies and I have enough to stress over already! I would be so sad if even one didn't make it out alive

When I talked to the breeder, he said you have to remove them from the envelope and put them in the box - but be in a very small room in case they wake up and fly away Oh course, he made it sound so easy
