Butterfly Release

I'm thinking of doing a butterfly release, but I have heard mixed reviews. Does any have good or bad experience with doing a butterfly release???

Re: Butterfly Release

I worked a wedding where they did this..... most of them were still drugged up and it wasn't really a 'release'. Most just landed on a nearby chair or the ground and laid there.

Re: Butterfly Release

I've heard of people doing this and having a lot of the butterflies be dead...what a bummer way to start out your life together lol

Re: Butterfly Release

mass release is definitely better. But you need a basket for them with netting.

As much as I love butterflies, I don't think I will be doing a release. Most of the breeds released are not indigenous to this region and they can really screw up a local ecosystem. And if you don't do it at the right time of day they may not be able to find food and shelter for the night and die several hours after the release.

If you insist on doing it, please consider getting the caterpillars and growing the butterflies yourself.

The whole being shipped in an envelope individually inside a cooler thing just seems so very cruel.

Re: Butterfly Release

Thanks....i found one website which seemed reputable, swallowtailfarm.com. I am worried about the butterflies dying - I wouldnt be doing the individual release though, most likely the mass release. I thought about a dove release, but i dont think my ceremony time is early enough for the doves to get home.

Re: Butterfly Release

I was a BM in a wedding with a mass release. A lot of the butterflies weren't alive. It looked really pretty in person, but in the photos the butterflies that did survive just look like white 'blobs' floating in front of the camera.

Re: Butterfly Release

I think this is a beautiful idea in practice, but the thought that at least a couple of them are going to be dead upon release or will die soon after is enough to skeeve me out.
