Ok i've been to two weddings with butterfly releases: 1 was amazing and so elegant. It was such a beautiful gesture. The second one ended with the bride in tears. something happened that when the guests opened the individal butterfly containers, all of them were dead....nothing flew out. Something went terribly wrong and it ended with the bride and flower girl in tears.

i just sent her an email...when she replies i will let you know. The one with the bad experience was a destination wedding in florida and that was such a fluke!

Re: Butterfly Release??? Opinions??

i personally am against the use of butterfiles in this manner.
If the butterflies do not defrost (most of them are flash frozen freeze dried) they do not fly out of the envelope. They fall to the floor and die.
if their wings get touched they get damaged and may never be able to fly again. this will kill them.

A lot of the time brides (i am not pinpointing you at all) do not do the right research needed and order butterflies that cannot survive in the enviornment that they are being released into.
They do not take the time of year into account, or the location or the predators that live in the area...

So...if you're going to do it, look into it long and hard, and don't rely solely on what the company you are ordering from tells you.
Butterflies are BIG business in America right now.

sorry to be a downer... i've seen it done where it was wonderful, but sadly that is not usually the case.

So May is warm, that's over 65 degrees, that's ok for butterflies correct???
I always see them flying around in April going forward.
Do you think the basket is a safer way to go with the butterflies???? that way they dont get hurtt?

I don't know... I mean, I've done a lot of research on it because a friend of mine wanted to do it... I found a lot of negative things.
I just can't personally see doing it. I don't really agree with the dove release either but at least they are trained to find their way home.
The butterflies aren't.

I don't think poorly of you for wanting to do it btw. I hope i didn't come across that way. I think it's a really cute idea and I understand why people want to do it. I also like the fact that you're a May bride asking and not a November bride like someone on another board i'm a member of...

Someone put this way to me... and it didn't shape my opinion on the subject but it sort of put it into perspective...

would you do a kitten release at your wedding?
if yes can i come? lol jk
if not... think about why you wouldn't and see if any of the reasons could be associated with the butterflies too or if there are similar reasons to not do it with butterflies.

Haven't been to a wedding where it's been done, nor did I have one at mine. But if I were invited to a wedding where one was taking place, as a guest, I'd be skeeved. Both for the reasons mentioned above, and on a more visceral level--I neither want to handle nor be surrounded by a large group of insects. MHO.

LMAO@ kitten release.(and i wanna come too!!) i agree with boxofrocks.. i'd totally die if someone released a bunch of insects at a wedding.. omg.. i can just see folks swatting and ducking and a couple of unnecessary screams..

question yoko, if they are flash frozen how healthy is that for them? where do the butterflies ultimately go?

I sent you FM, but my experience was GREAT!! I used swallowtailfarms.com and EVERY butterfly was alive and flew away!! The guests absolutely loved it and it was a HUGE success!!! I researched long and hard before going with Swallowtail Farms!! They do come with very specific instructions that DO need to be followed! Def one of my FAVORITE parts of my wedding!!

Oh Yeah...Its expensive but in my opinion it was worth EVERY penny!!! Many guests have never seen it or heard of it- THEY LOVE IT!! We just got complimented on it again last week!!

I wanted to do this also and everyone told me it was risky. Apparently the instructions have to be followed to the T. I think once you follow the instructions you should be fine. I just did not want to risk it being a disaster.
Why don't you consider a dove release?

I went to a wedding where each guest was given a butterfly to release. The ceremony was outside so we were given the package before we sat down so (not knowing what it was) some people squeezed the package making the butterflies bleed. I would suggest if you're giving one to each guest, tell them what it is before giving it to them.
