We are considering releasing butterflies at our wedding instead doing petal cones.... Do you guys think it's too dorky?
TIA

sorry, I don't like the butterfly idea.... just don't like the ideas of animals as props / accessories.... same goes for fish in vases, or dove releases....

Re: Butterlies???
We had a thread discussing this awhile back. It is a beautiful idea, but some girls had some problems or heard about issues with the butterflies. Some of the butterflies are not living when their containers are opened and that could be a mess. Sorry for the bad news.

Have to agree, Same happens to women who sue fish in their CP-alot go belly up before the night is over and sorry, i wouldnt want to stare at a dead fish all night!
Anytime you use live animals, you tread the line with the cruelty factor unless its yyour beloved pet who you just naturally take better care of (dog ringbears fot example.)

Hmm never really thought of it as cruelty to animals as they raise butterflies as school projects and then set them free.... but i guess people see it that way- Thanks!

Re: Butterlies???
I think it's the most amazing thing to watch when the bride and groom and or bridal party does the release, it is just beautiful to watch and photograph. I used to do wedding photography, so I can say I have only seen one dead butterfly and have watched over 50-75 releases, they do send you a few extra, but the ticket is to go with a butterfly company that breeds and raises butterflies-I am doing it at my wedding, Dont go to the cheapest place, go for quality and you will see the difference. I would suggest going to this website to reading about it, swallowtailfarms.com, amazing butterflies is another site, but I went with swallowtail for a reason.... It is by no means cruel, like putting fish in a bowl at a reception, yes thats cruel, this is giving a butterfly its life, its just so pretty.........

Re: Butterlies???
we intented to do a butterfly release. we ordered the butterflies and they were delivered the day before the wedding.
we FORGOT to bring them with us to the ceremony. lol
so we released them the next day. unfortunately, a few of them were dead.
also- let me tell u that the ones that were alive- it wasnt like an immediate fly away, the butterflys took a while to realize where they were and what they had to do- fly away.
although a beautiful thing- i wouldnt suggest it!

Totally agree. I was at one wedding that did this. I love, love, love my animals, but in a very anti-PETA, meat-eating kind of way, and I was sad for the poor butterflies in those little packages! Not to mention many of them were not alive (and if they were, barely) at the time the packages were opened up.
It seemed like a beautiful idea to me in theory at the time, but in reality, it didn't work so well.

Re: Butterlies???
My cousin did this and it turned out to be pretty sad. When everyone tried to let them go some dropped to the ground and others tried to fly away but were so confused and dizzy then flew in spirals and ended up on the ground as well. It took away a little bit from the happy moment.

I know a couple that used butterflies.. they had a hot summer wedding and they accidentally left the butterflies in the heat.. after the ceremony when they were ready to be released, most were dead...

Yes this is true! That does happen I love them so I wont do it.. I don't want to be the one who was responsible for the little guys deaths
