How many of you are renting a place? How many of you are buying real estate?

Re: BUY VS RENT...
We have owned our home for about 3 years now.
And doubt even if we move back to NYC we'll ever go back to renting. Maybe temporarily until we find a house we like.

Renting. I doubt we will ever be able to afford to own property. plus right now, it is just easier not having to worry about taking care of things ourselves. We love our apartment.

We're renting an apartment together right now. We're going to look for a house to rent after the wedding while we save to buy.

Re: BUY VS RENT...
We rent an apt together. We think about buying vs renting ALL the time. Each has it's pro's and con's. We both work 6 days a week, and really have no time to deal with the maintenance issues of owning a home.
But, we miss the yard space of our own home.
I talk to people all the time that are the same age as me that own and they tend to agree with some of the advanatages of renting that I point out.
I don't think there is a hard and fast rule of what applies to everyone. You have to decide what is important to you and what you are willing to give up to gain the important things.
We still can't decide which way to go.
Just my two cents.

Re: BUY VS RENT...
Renting. We don't plan on staying there more then 2 years TOPS so it wasn't worth it to buy anything now.
At first FH was totally against renting but after looking at a few factors he realized this was the best idea for us. I don't know where i'll be working in 2 years but it DEF won't be where I'm at now, we wouldn't built up enough equity in our home if we only owned for a short period of time, we don't want to worry about taxes and maint. right now.

Re: BUY VS RENT...
I already own my house but sometimes I wish I was renting. cesspool failed $2500 and total destruction of my yard.
window rotting - $3800 and we did it ourselves
these were in teh same month btw.
replacement of furnace - quoted anywhere from 4000 to 9000.
it never ends...never.

Re: BUY VS RENT...
We are renting right now...we hate it. Both of us want out of the apartment, its kind of falling apart and its really annoying to feel like we're throwing away $1500 every month to nothing.
We're looking to hopefully buy between 2011 and 2012...it depends on my job situation. Right now we don't make enough to make mortgage payments, property taxes, increased utilities, etc...

That's what we keep thinking about. And for us it is a huge drawback to owning. My hot water stopped working on Christmas morning last year. I made a phone call and 30 min later I had hot water again. What would it have cost me to have a plumber come on Christmas?

Re: BUY VS RENT...
We currently rent & have been renting together for the past 4 years. Prior to this apartment DH rented an apartment in Port Jeff for 2 years while in Stony Brook. We are currently renting because DH has not had any luck on the full time job front. Fingers crossed he finds something soon. Then we plan on buying.

Re: BUY VS RENT...
It def never ever ends...
but we love owning because every month when we pay our mortgage it doesn't go to someone else. It goes to US.
We can do whatever we want to our house. Knock down walls if we want. Redo bathrooms and know we're not helping build the equity of a house that belongs to someone else.
It really helps that FI is VERY handy. We've had our share of things failing and not working but between FI being able to build anything and a good knowledge of electric and mechanical systems. FI's brother having very good knowledge of anything mechanical, plumbing and electrical we've never had to hire anyone for any 'house failures'.
Thank god cuz they are ridiculously expensive.

We bought a house. Renting made FH feel like he was wasting $$ (remember we're old )

Re: BUY VS RENT...
We bought our house 4yrs ago. Things were reeeaaally tight back then, I was still in school and FH was paying mortgage + everything else w his own salary. But we made it work. It was actually a lot of fun looking back. Since then we've been doing things to it here and there. After the wedding is my bedroom. I can't wait!
