It has a lot to do with number crunching. I was heading that way for a while but opted out. IMO you're better off on the department store end - if you're on the designer end (more of merchandising), you're acting much more in a sales capacity.

You can probably get more info by going to the store websites and getting into their 'employment opportunity' pages.

I was offered a job with Macy's as a buyer post-graduation! Like you, I thought self, you like to shop..Self, what's better than getting paid to shop! Let me tell you, lots!

So they wanted to start me at buying kitchen stuff. Apparently you work your way up to bags and shoes, where there are fun trips to Italy to pick out merchandise! And I don't like cooking really. And then there was lots of number-crunching, determining what sold the most, etc...I don't like working with the numbers...

My cousin is a buyer at Bed Bath and Beyond ... it's a lot of analysis and number crunching. It's ordering for tons of stores around the region and keeping track of the sales. It's a lot of travel to shows also.
