Re: Buying house problem/ques
We closed on our house about 1 month before our wedding. I know what you mean about feeling confused. Buying a house is a huge and scary decision! Especially since the prices have gotten so high! We must have looked at over 100 houses before we found ours. We spent every weekend for about 6 months going out to see homes with our real estate agent. Our house isn't very big, but we figured it's better to start off small putting our money into something we'll own rather than paying rent for an apartment. We briefly considered moving off L.I. since you can get so much more for your money in other states. It was so tempting to get what looked like a mansion for the same price as our little house. But what it came down to was all of our family lives on L.I., and it was more important to us to be near them than to have a big house and be all alone.
My advice (because I feel like we got a little s crewed in the closing process) is try not to use a seller's agent because even if they act like they're your best friend, they always keep the seller's best interest in mind, which means a higher price for you. (You'll know if your real estate agent is a seller's agent because they make you sign a form stating so when they take you to see a house).
Also, try to get mortgage rate quotes from a few different mortgage companies. We just stuck with one because we felt we could trust them, but the DAY before our closing, they raised our rate by A LOT so now we're paying a ton more than we should have to in interest.
Good luck to you!!!
