buying in laws house??

buying in laws house??

ok... so, FIL is a pilot for united airlines. right now, he works out of JFK. both of my ILs were raised out in PA, and so they've talked about moving out there when FIL retires in a few years. BUT, FIL just found out that he is being transferred to another airport, and so they may be moving to PA sooner than they had planned.
now, DH and have been talking about adding on to our house ( its a small 2 bedroom, 1 bath rancher, and would not be enough space for kids in the future), but now that ILs may be moving sooner, they have offered for us to buy their house from them. FIL mentioned them signing the deed over to us, and then we would pay them, instead of a mortgage company.... their house is nice. its a rancher also, but with 3 bedrooms, a huge kitchen and 2 car garage that they had added on about 10 years ago, a room that could be an office, plus a basement 'den', too... a nice deck out back also.... it would definitely be enough space for us, but there are definitely some things DH and i would want to change- like updating the bathoom and kitchen, and we both like the idea of having a master suite, which their house doesnt' have....
so we're not sure what we're gonna do. we've only had our current house a little over a year. ILs house would be more room for us, and i'm sure they would give us a good interest rate, BUT at the same time i don't know how i would feel about living in ' thier' house, or how they would react to some of the changes DH and i would want to make.... any insight??? thanks!

Re: buying in laws house??

i definitely think that you should seriously consider the offer but what will make it succesful is OPEN and HONEST communication between you and your ILs.

Make sure they know from the beginning that once it is signed over to you it is YOUR HOUSE. You will be making drastic changes that are right for you. Listen to what they have to say BUT also pay attention to their reactions. . . sometimes people don't say what they really feel but they can't hide their discomfort at the thought of a complete overhaul!

After that is taken care of, once you fix it up how you want - it will always be YOUR house. . . you are changing it to meet your needs so it is no longer their house.

I think it sounds like a great plan and it can definitely work out for both parties!

GOOD LUCK!

I totally agree with what she said...and would like to add, that make sure with family that everything is still in writing, and just make sure there will be nothing held over your head if you spend money the way you want b/c you owe them money
