I don't know whether to go with a buttercream icing or a fondant icing (with a layer of buttercream underneath). I know fondant looks smoother, but it tastes gross. My hall says they will peel it off before they cut it, but what if some of it doesn't come off? Should I just go with buttercream?

I would say go with what looks better. Are you having another desert besides the cake?

Well there will definitely be buttercream on the cake regardless...just wondering whether I should have fondant on top of it or not...

Yep - we are having another dessert, as well as cookies and pastries on the table.

Re: Cake?
Wouldn't the cake look messy once the tope layer is peeled off though? I mean how can it stay smooth when the top layer is peeled off? Did the baker say the buttercream layer would look smooth?

Re: Cake?
Quite honestly - I was the same way. When I went to one bakery they said oh no you have to have the fondant it will take away from the entire looks of the design on the cake. Well, I went to another bakery (the one I knew I was getting the cake from) - they made the same cake with the design and it looks great. Here was a picture of mine
edited to say this is buttercream

Re: Cake?
When you put it that way, I would go with buttercream and save yourself (and the hall) the trouble. Besides, they can really smooth out the buttercream.
This was my buttercream cake, it looks like fondant:
I used fondant but I actually liked it! The place I used had a white chocolate fondant that was really tasty -- since it was white chocolate, it didn't taste chalky at all
