Cake flavors

I have no ideas about cake flavors and will be meeting with the baker in a week Can anyone recommend their cake flavor? How receptive where guests to such flavor?

Most of my guests are of italian, greek, egyptian, and puerto rican background (for the most part)

I like chocolate and so does FH and FH father, so it is imperative that I include such in one of the tiers.

Can you explain the difference in taste between I believe is called fondant and the onther type of cake. I am sorry..;.I am not good at this

I love all of these......

Re: Cake flavors

We did marble cake thru out the whole thing-we had one layer with Cannoli filling (for the italians) Strawberry (for the others) and chocolate mousse-We figured we touched at least one liking of each guest. Our guests thought the cake was very very good.

Fondant is heavier-it also (to me) tastes horrible-it is smoother looking-those cakes you posted are most likely fondant

There is buttercream-which is definitely more tastey then fondant but it doesnt always look as nice when done as fondant

Whipped cream is also an option-but it will NOT be perfectly flat.

Re: Cake flavors

We are doing choc fudge (not butter cream or fondant since FH dosent like them and lvoes cake!) with white choc moose and cookies and cream filling. I dont care about cake so I let FH pick it and now I am worried since its so crazy. My thing and why I let FH pick it is b/c I have been to 100's of weddings and never tried the cake. With choc you can never go wrong!

Re: Cake flavors

The cake and filling will be tough since FH and I like totally different types: vanilla and chocolate, but we both like cannoli.

Definately BUTTERCREAM, fondant only tastes good if made with white butter which you can really only get if you ship it from Europe. Which is not likely so ... they use

Crisco. eww

I actually looked at a reception hall who said it looks pretty and they will make fondant. But it won't be served with the fondant on. Which means it was really terrible. Yuck! They were out as soon as they said that. What do they do to cut corners with the rest of the food?!

Re: Cake flavors

Personally I don't mind fondant!

I think it's yummy!

I had a 3 layer cake for my e party & we had the following:

Lemon with mix of vanilla buttercream & raspberry preserves

***this was the fave of me & many others -- lemon cake is delicousssss!!**

Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

Vanilla cake with raspberry preservers & chocolate buttercream

**Also a great option (that I was going to do but changed @ last minute) for chocolate is :

Devils food cake with a vanilla type frosting possibly mixed w some type of fruit!!

All of these people LOVED -- they are classic flavors & were delicious.

It depends if you want something more contemporary/inventive or classic.

Re: Cake flavors

No problem!!

Did you ever have red velvet cake? It has a chocolatey taste & it's very yummy! It also looks beautifulll!

But the only thing if the baker is not good @ making it, I wouldn't risk it since it's not an easy cake to make. Some bakers specialize only in red velvet.

What bakery are you going to?

Re: Cake flavors

We did a cake that was Napolean style with butter cream filling- it was sooo yummy and the guests loved it.

I wouldn't do fondant- it's more to get the look of the cake right but tastes aweful- I wouldn't recommend it unless you're having an outdoor reception (it holds better in the outdoors than butter cream or whipped cream).
Most people do the fondant for shape and looks.

i just went to an event that had yellow cake w/ cannolli filling OMG it was sooo good!!

napoleon is also another one of my favorites.

As for fondant, some people either like it or don't... but its up to you!
