Cake Help!

Re: Cake Help!

I think regardless of what you pick, it'll be great. Fondant or not, people will eat what they eat.

Although I am not a basketweave fan, now reading back you mentioned you are having a garden theme...that would fit in perfectly!

Re: Cake Help!

We are probably going with number one. FH likes it the best. I suggsted the white and pink one to him but he said there is something he doesnt like about it, even though it resembled #1 a lot. I love the one with all the little flowers on it, but he said its too busy so I think #1 it will be.

We will change the tulips to gerbers in hot pink and orange, then change the ribbons to red. It will still ahve the 'grass' painted on it and the butterflies if i can manage it.

Oh and ladies, do not be afraid to ask for odd fillings. We had a list of the fillings they usually use, but when I went to their tasting, I had a piece of fresh napolean cake and O M G!!!!!!! PHENOMENAL! SOOOO good. So I asked the baker if she could make our cake vanilla with that filling even though its not a typical wedding cake filling and she said no problem.

Its DELICIOUS! Fresh whipped cream mixed with bavarian cream so its super light and fluffy and then they throw berries in, -salivates thinking about it-

They also had an amazing custard and strawberry one and chocolate mousse and banana. So if you are thinking of weird combos, ask. The worse they can do is say no.

Re: Cake Help!

Just a note: whipped cream cannot stay out for long so if you are planning on having your cake out on display, you really shouldn't go with it. (I used to work at a bakery ). I think as long as the cake and filling taste good fonadant shouldn't worry you. I personally like the appearance of it better, too.

ETA: oh and butter cream is also an option if you want it displayed and it looks like whipped cream if you really like that look!

Re: Cake Help!

Can they do whipped cream with a smooth look? If you two are not a fan of the basketweave look..
I totally understand about fonudt too sweet and too expensive. That is why we decided on buttercream. It has a nice sweetness to it. We hope that we helped you out.

Thanks folks. yep we are going with fondant. We will be indoors so i didnt think whipped would melt-I was just trying to get a sense if folks thought a cake should taste better or look better. They put buttercream beneath so its fine and our filling is what matters! YUMMY! People who dont wnat fondant can go hang out at the chocolate fountain or zeppoli station :)

Re: Cake Help!

The first one is beautiful. But taste is most important. Why cant you haev them do the first one with buttercream? Will it not look as smooth? Can they do fondant over the buttercream?

Just saw that you said they will do this! Enjoy your cake!!

I agree with ure FH, I like the first one. I think it's simple and classy! They're all pretty tho.

Re: Cake Help!

Gina, they do do fondant over buttercream but its a very thin layer. It would look REAAAALLY close with buttercream, but the baker said there will be tiny imperfections that won't be seen by guests but which CAN be picked up by the camera when photographer does close up shots. She said if its not that important to me, than to go with buttercream. I guess we have to think about it. My problem with buttercream is I am afraid it will be toos weet. This sounds silly because fondant is sooo much sweeter, but you can peel fondant off. You cant really wipe off buttercream so you STILL end up with people eating around it...

HAs anyoen been to weddings where they had buttercream icing? Was it ok?

Wow. This post. All I can say is wow.

Whatever cake and whatever icing you choose peteysbride I'm sure will look wonderful and taste wonderful.

I'm doing a gerbera 'theme' too, I'd love to bounce ideas off of you!

ok two things first...One DONT do whipped cream in July, whipped cream melts extremely fast and if it gets just a little bit warm wherever the cake is, it will become a disaster.

2nd-not every fondant tastes bad, most buy the fondant but there are many bakers now who are actually making their own fondant and tastes great, some mix it with marshmellows now...recently i had a cupcake with fondant icing and it was the best part.

But you can also use buttercream under the fondant if the place doesnt make their own. Or the best solution and this is actually cheaper so its a plus...You make the one layer that you will cut into real cake, the rest will be models with the fondant over it but no cake inside and you ask for sheetcake to be served to your guests...it will also cut down on price of cake, cut down on the cake cutting price that Rh's charge and its alot quicker, bc guests dont have to wait until the cake is cut

My cousin had a whipped cream cake at her August Wedding and it was displayed thru out the entire wedding and it held up beautifully, it didn't melt at all...

I like the first cake and the ribbons on each tier. I would go though with taste over apperance..

Re: Cake Help!

Ok so this is the cake-new idea. Still love #1 but here's soemthing I saw that looked cool. We would change colors of course-maybe pink, red and orange fondant circles instead of chocolate and use red accenting? or pink and orange circles and red ribbons with gerbers?

yay or nay?

Pft didnt post first time.
