Cake Help!

Re: Cake Help!

personally, I don't think cake dissection is necessary... it's not like fondant is inedible... (OK, that may be a matter of opinion, but you get my point... it's not toxic)

Also, if the fondant is peeled away, won't the cake slice look squishy on that side?

It's sort of like carvel cake flowers.... almost no one over age 5 eats them, but in general, we serve them with the slice just for aesthetics...

JMO....

I think at the point where we got the cake..everyone was too drunk to care whether the cake slice looked pretty

I didn't think it was that big a deal...as long as there's no obvious finger holes or bites taken out of my cake..I'm eating it!!

thats what i said, i mean besides the part about people touching my food, it can get messy, im sorry but during a tasting they have all the time to do it nice and neat, during the wedding when they have to hurry to get the cake out they wont be so neat...Thats why i do think the sheet cake option is best, but she should do what she feels best.

I love cakes, (remeber I am the make beleive Pastry chef)hahahaha, but I didnt think they were soo complicated to eat, lol.

Question, if you put buttercream on the inside and fondant over that, wouldnt the cake look like a big mess, woudln't the buttercream be all messed up? I dont know

I like this post, its a good conversation maker

and I like cake #1 also

The buttercream is a thin layer that is allowed to set usually by refrigeration. This way, the crumbs stay in place and there is a smoother cake to deal with when putting on fondant.

I kinda want cake now!

I had the same concern about fondant not tasting good and I asked my baker about it. He said if it is done right the layer of fondant is so thin that it doesn't taste so strong. Also the fondant makes a MAJOR difference in the smooth look of the cake. I went with fondant and I am happy with my choice. My cake will be made for 90 people and there will be a sheet cake for the other 80 people. I hope this helps!

Ok...now that we have shown our neurosies about food touching... -grins- ENOUGH! My goodness. Its food prep. And ;let me say during a tasting they were not doing it as if they ahd all the time in the world. it was one of those massive events with 400+ people invited.

If people don't like the fondant, they can just peel it off as we did during the tasting or eat around it as I intended and Portjeff reiterated. Thankys Port :)

Now lets all move on off this poor horse because bad enough being dead but then shoving fondant in its mouth to boot is just cruel and unesccesary punishment.

RK I want cake too but I'm ona diet! Have to settle fora popsicle.

Re: Cake Help!

i know this sounds crazy and shallow but the cake is the one place i feel as though appearance matters more... there will be so many pictures of the cake but who will remember what it tastes like? (as long as its not totally gross, that is)

Gwyn, thats actually a realistic and valid point. Didnt think of that. Ure right-people usually dont rememebr what they ate but the pics will last forever. We are going with fondant. people can just eat around it or doggy bag it when they want to send their kids into a sugar coma so they can sleep :)

well everyone does have their opinions, and i know ive stated mine too lol but when it comes down to it what you want is what really matters...So do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. Trust me the fondant, buttercream, whip cream or whatever you pick wont make or break your wedding, and wont really bother your guests...Listen regardless of what the cake is, even buttercream or whip cream, i usually eat everything else and just take a little from the edge bc its always too much regardless, i see alot of people doing this...Its not a big deal for your guests to eat everything but that part...Do what makes you happy, it will also be the last thing on your mind that day. Whatever you pick will be great, we have too many other things to stress about this should be the last of our worries

after reading this thread i realized that i ordered my cake and i dont know if its fondant or buttercream? is that normal? i need to call my bakery tommrow

Re: Cake Help!

O.o Well fondant has a very thin layer of buttercream underneath. I would check-most brides choose fondant because it just gives it a perfect glasslike look. But buttercream if done correctly, can be beautiful/

haha, this cake talk is sooooo interesting, I love it. I have a while until I view my RH's cake portfolio and/or meet with the baker, I beleive it will be around this time next year. I am looking soo forward to that, I cant wait to do some cake tasting, OMG, but this talk is good bec when you meet with the baker you will know what to talk about and what things mean in the 'cake world'
