cake horror story

cake horror story

so, my engagement party was yesterday. everything was perfect... EXPECT for my cake

I wanted to post so I can, perhaps, warn and or help others.

My cake was pretty big because of the amount of guests, but no matter how big or small, a bakery that claims to be able to make cakes should be able to deliver what was promised. At first I had designed a cake myself, then decided to find a detailed picture and submit that. So, I got Martha Stewarts wedding cake book and was amazed by the 7 tier beautifully piped IVORY fondant cake.
I fell in love and called up the bakery right away. Of course, they wanted more money, but at that point I didnt care. I agreed and they said that they can make it happen. I said I want it EXACTLY like the picture, and the color of the cake to be Ivory, just like the picture. Anyway, we were at the rh and they were suppose to be there at 5, they came around 530 540ish, which was fine. right away I saw the first bottom two layers, the fondant had CRACKS and the COLOR WAS WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just looked at the lady... I had no words. The bottom layer was not even piped and I just took off. If I stayed there I dunno if I would've cried or yelled at her. Anyway, I had to get over it, which I did and came back down when she left...... BUT, to my surprise, the cake was crooked!! She didnt place some of the layers properly, and well.... anyways, I just want to warn you guys to MAKE SURE your bakery knows what they are doing, make sure you get a great iron cad contract with specific details and include that if the cake is cracked or something is not what you agreed to that you are entitled to money back.. or something, just so these people make extra sure to give you exactly what you want. I trusted them and this is what happened to me. Luckily people didn't notice and weren't paying attention, and I also forgot about it soon after, BUT the pictures will last forever. Please guys, becareful who you choose for your cakes.

i'm sorry, that suckss! you should ask for $$$ back and talk to the manager... tell him it was unacceptable.

we had our own cake 'horror story' -- our e-party was a luncheon at a great italian restaurant and they included a napoleon cake was was supposed to be amazing. we already had a cake since my dad's friend owns a carvel and made us a custom ice cream cake (cookie dough and strawberry, with one of our e-pictures screened on top) but we figured why not have 2 cakes?

the cake wasn't the prettiest thing but our guests raved about the taste... however, the funny part is that they made a spelling mistake on it. I'm really anal about spelling and notice mistakes on EVERYTHING so of course i noticed our cake, but i just thought it was funny... my sis got a pic:

can you notice the mistake? (they took it in the back and fixed it after we pointed it out lol)

W T F? Good lord! It's not just that they misspelled it - they pluralized it!!! And what are those 'piles' of taupe icing supposed to be???
Good thing you had two cakes - at least this one tasted good and you got a chuckle out of it (after the fact at least).

yeah i agree with being careful. I didnt want to take the chance of a bakery telling me 'oh no problem we can do that' many of course will say that to get your business. I made sure to go to someone who ive seen do the same work and know 100% that they can do what i wanted. I too have seen a bunch of cakes that were supposed to be duplicated and really wasnt. I even remember a post that a bunch of girls posted pics that they showed the bakery and what the finished product looked like and they said how they didn't do what was asked.

Sorry, but i hope you didnt let that bring you down and were able to enjoy your party

our other cake was beautiful and this cake was delicious and so ugly that we just laughed about it. we had a laid back e-party so it was fine. if this was my wedding cake i would have been upset

im so glad we got a pic of it before and after

edit: im impressed they managed to spell 'congratulations' correctly

I'm so sorry that happened to you! Thank you for posting this- I now know to make sure I get these things put into the contract.

On the bright side, at least you now know so this won't happen with your wedding cake.

Re: cake horror story

Sorry this happened to you, I used to bake cakes on the side and I have used fondant and buttercream and If ANY of my cakes had any crakes on them, i would take the fondant off and start again. I just don't understand how someone can let that go. And the fact that the cake was crooked just, blows my mind. That obviously shows they didnt give 2 S%#$'s about it or else they would have either said something, or fixed it.

I would've flipped out, personally. That would not have been okay with me. I would call them and ask for your money, or part of it back. That is an easy fix and I feel there is no reason for it.

I would call them and get money back or something...i mean im sure no one really thought about it-I couldnt tell you what any of the cakes looked like at the weddings I went to but I know how disheartening it is-my wedding cake was NOT at all what I thought it would look like

I was reading this as if it where my screwed up cake and if you were saying to me it doesn't look that bad... I'd have a fit!

After engagement, I staring to live by the motto, the bride is always right!

And I have to agree with radiant, that cake it would have made me cry and scream and ... gold dust... on white fondant... ewww! poor girl.

Re: cake horror story

That is unacceptable!! You pay for a service and you expect to get what you want. I would definitely call them back and ask them what are they going to do to compensate you for the mishaps.

thanks for all of the support

update-
I actually spoke to my mom about this today. She doesn't want me calling them. At first I disagreed with her, but she is right. I don't think I would've gotten anything back from them because I'm an idiot and trusted them. Contracts are important and I was too trusting and didn't get things in writing.... You know that saying 'if it's not in writing, it doesn't exist.'

Anyway, we will NEVER order from them again and we will make sure our friends and family don't, either. They lost a lot of potential business.

thanks again for all of the love xoxo

edit for messing up on the quote lol

Re: cake horror story

oh and something even more outrageous and funny that my sister told me, apparently she was doing piping even after she setup, at the rh!!!... I wonder how much of the actual cake was really 'ready' when they got to the rh. They probably rushed it, which is why it looked the way it did.

Re: cake horror story

Who did you order the cake from? I would still call and say it was not what your ordered and that you are upset. If the cake maker doesn't hear from you they will assume everything was perfect. As for piping when the cake arrived that was prob because she was piling the layers on top of each other at the hall.
