Do I NEED to buy these? It seems like a waste of money...can't I just borrow them from my RH??

Re: Cake knife and server
I put the ones that go with my silverware on my registry. My aunt and uncle but them for us as an engagement gift. They're pretty and silver, fancy enough for the wedding, but not too fancy, and something I can use again in the future. Pics in my 'wedding stuff' album.

Sure, you can use the RH's!
Most people just like to buy a special set because then they will use that set eveytime they are serving a cake or pie in their home.I bought my set because it was beautiful and I think it will be nice during future family occacsions to use the serving set we cut our wedding cake with.
But there is no rule saying you have to do this!

I registered for mine, I received my champagne glass as a gift from a friend ( Vera Wang) SO I wanted the matching cake knife set!

Re: Cake knife and server
My aunt already bought them for mine. I'm the type of person who would use it (at least the cutter) after the wedding.
It's a personal choice.

You can buy ones that you know you would use after the ceremony like at parties. Or you could go somewhere like Party City or Michaels and purchase them for less money but I believe the RH should have them their for you already.

FH's aunt wanted to buy them for us as an engagement gift and his brother and wife purchased the toasting flutes that match. These are them:
I wasn't going to bother but then I saw a beach themed set for $10 and just bought it.
Wrapwithus.com is where I bought mine.

Of course you can use the one's the reception hall provides :) It's totally up to you. Mine only cost $30 (got them on sale) so I bought them myself. I will use them after the wedding so its not a waste of money for me.

Re: Cake knife and server
I was going to use the RH's, but this weekend when I was at my parents' house, my mom brought this up and I realized that throughout all the years, at any occasion, my mom would use her set from their wedding - and usually on cakes that I had baked. I love to cook and bake, and now feel like it would be a justified expense since I'd definitely get use out of it in the future.
RAK220, those are very elegant! I really like them!

Yes you can, the same goes for the toasting flutes also. I've heard a lot of brides say it was unnecessary to buy these things if the RH can supply them.
I only bought the server set because I got it for $5.

I didn't have them. I'm not a fan of clutter and I have no fancy china cabinet so I thought they'd be a waste of money for us. The RH had a set and they were fine.
