My friend who is getting married is looking into wedding cakes. I need your opinions please, do you think that 800-1000 dollars is too much for a custom wedding cake?
Sorry it is for 125-130 people. 4-tier cake.

I'm sure that opinions will vary greatly on this topic I think it's a lot but I don't think it's 'too much.' My cake was in that price range and I was well aware that I was paying about $10 a slice for something that I'm sure no one cared about but me. But, it was important to me. I thought the cake tasted amazing (I'm addicted to baked goods, so I like to consider myself an expert ) and those who ate it also couldn't believe how great it was (at $10 a slice it should be though!).
If your friend is still looking for a baker, I used Cheryl Kleinman in Brooklyn. She was so great to work with and, although I had my mind set on a a certain idea, she added some great suggestions that made it even better than I'd imagined. She also made us free cake samples - 4 two-layer round mini cakes in a variety of flavors to help us select which ones we wanted. I also met with a few other well-known bakers, so let me know if your friend wants any mini-reviews on those as well

I think the price should reflect the complexity of the cake design. If its a simple design then you can probably do better elsewhere. If its a complicated design then it might be a good price.

Personally, I don't even eat the cake at the weddings I go to because they have all been so bad or I'm too full to eat dessert after a 3 course meal. If cake is so important though and your freind is spending that much money, I would let her know to pass along the info that the cake is custom made and will be sure to please. That way all the money she spend is not for naught. :)
