I was told that fondant cake doesn't taste as good as butter cream cake. I am not even sure of the difference. Also, that fondant cake is hard to cut in the summer... this doesn't make any sense to me...Does anyone have a clue?
TIA

Re: cake question?
I heard fondant isn't good either. One BM who we met with actually said that a lot of people take it off the cake before they eat it.

Re: cake question?
I usually don't eat the frosting on a cake so I figure that if my guests don't like the fondant they just won't eat it. I just think the look is much sleeker.

I don't like fondant, but it does look nicer/smoother... but be careful of buttercream in the summer bc it may melt easier..

Re: cake question?
Fondant make the cake look smoother. I am personally not a fan. And it tends to sweat in the summer also

i dont eat any frosting on a cake either, whether buttercream, whipped cream or whatever. I do it all the time so other ppl can
HOWEVER, some places make their own fondant and can taste good. Some bakeries buy the fondant from a place that sells it while others now make it themselves to make it taste better. Some even use rice krispies or other stuff to give it a good taste. Ive tasted horrible fondant and great fondant.
also in the summer you have to be more careful with buttercream, that would melt faster. ANd also whipped cream which most places recommend you wont even do when its hot

Re: cake question?
I personally love the way fondant looks but hate the way it tastes. I'm all about the cake tasting good so I'm going with buttercream.

Re: cake question?
Fondant has a smooth look and it looks great on a cake. Usually, there is buttercream underneath and people peel off the fondant-it's very sweet and has a weird texture in your mouth. As far as it being hard to cut in the summer, I have never heard that. We had fondant over buttercream and it was perfectly fine....also since most of the time you have cake inside your RH, the weather outside shouldn't make a difference (our wedding was in July and there were no problems). Re: cake question?
It is easier to shape and design, and holds up better. Buttercream tastes better though.

Re: cake question?
honestly it depends on the bakery. There are very VERY few bakerys that actually make their fondant fresh....when they do - it is DELICIOUS. I know of a great one in Massapequa - my cousin actually just used them...let me know if u'd like their info...
Now, if a bakery does NOT make it fresh on the premises, it can absolutely be bitterly AWEFUL. i would definetly go for a tasting if u're considering fondant to be sure. All this being said, I went through my RH who used Dortonis - and just because of the price i decided to go with buttercream...they assured me that they would really smooth it to still give it that elegant touch and they absolutely did..here's a pic!
i'm actually a pastry chef. i can tell you that fondant will make your cake cost more. secondly, fondant is a sugar dough that is used to give cakes a solid, sleek design, typically makes a cake more durable against shifts, bumps, etc. it can be flavored ...almond for example. however, it will most likely have a somewhat chewy/gummy-ish texture and isn't very very sweet, but there is buttercream underneath it and the two tend to gel together a bit (if both are made fresh and it's refrigerated properly)...i use both but hate fondant. i hate the texture and taste and am going to have only buttercream for my cake.
hope that helps :o) happy wedding everybody!

Thanks girls for all your input. I guess it's a matter of preference. I didn't think butter cream could be smoothed to have a sleek look but I guess you can. That cake above looks great!
Mandy...would you say on a hot summer day fondant is better or butter cream?
TIA

Re: cake question?
Fondant is more for decoration, to make look pretty, tastes ok, kind of bland.
