So, I met with the baker today. He nailed my vision! He can create my dream wedding cake!!! The design is insane! And I already know his cakes are beyond delish! He said that he had to go write it all up and when we come in for our tasting he will give us a price. I knew I had to give FH a ball park figure asked him to hive me an idea of what it could cost.... He said......
$1500
This was not what I expected. In your experience ... is this unreasonable?
The price qoute is for a four tier cake to feed approx. 180 guests.
Help me out ladies ... I'm scared to tell FH (lol).

it really depends on how detailed the cake is, how much work they have to put it. from what it sounds like, you gave a pretty elaborate cake, and for almost 200 people it will be large.
I would never pay that much for a cake, but what you are describing, it seems pretty appropriate (maybe a little on the high end, but if he is good he is going to be expensive)

Go to Black Forest Bakery in Lindenhurst. I'm pretty sure you will get a MUCH better price then that and the cakes are delicious as well as beautiful

That price seems a little excessive IMO but it really all depends on how intricate the design of the cake is.
Unfortunately, i don't really have any quotes to compare yours to because our cake is included with the reception but I will say that personally, i tend to not really notice the cake at weddings i've been to and its really not my favorite part of dessert either so I can't imagine spending over 1000 for one.

Our cake is more than that...
The cake has just been one of those things I've dreamed about forever, so I begged FH to upgrade us to it (and in return I promised I'd cut corners in other places, and I have).
This being said, it needs to be absolutely FABULOUS to warrant that price tag.

Like the girls said, it all depends on the detailing and the labor that goes into the cake. For example, a four tier fondant cake covered in handmade sugar flowers is going to cost double, triple a simpler 4 tier cake covered in buttercream. So while I don't think the price is INSANE, definitely shop around and see if you can cut it down. Maybe less flowers, less detail etc
