My aunt is a professional baker in NY and has offered to do my and FH's cake for our wedding. She told us that she would fly out a little early and make the cake out here. She's given us a few ideas for cake flavors, etc, but I'm not sure. I was thinking of making an appt with one of the better cake places out here and go for tastings to see what we like and see if she can duplicate it.
Do you think that is a good idea? I'd have to lie basically to the cake place about our wedding, etc.

I think it's a good idea! Go for your tasting and if you feel bad lieing to them just buy something small..like cookies Lol. When you find the flavor you like tell your aunt - I'm sure she will do a wonderful job!

I think this is a great idea....you dont have to give them all the details about your wedding. Just say that you are trying to get an idea of what you want...if necessary, give them the wrong phone number. I know that that kind of stinks but you could always do like ashley said and just buy something small.

I know it can feel shady doing stuff like that, but you're not being completely dishonest. You have not actually booked a baker yet! It's research. I think its a great idea. Weddings are expensive and a bride's gotta do what a bride's gotta do! And if you feel really guilty, go to them the next time you need a birthday cake or are bringing dessert to a friend's house!
