I'm picking out my cake next week, and a few people asked me what my cake topper is going to be, and I mentioned how I didn't think I was getting one. I got a few strange looks. I just didn't know if it was an absolute necessary thing. I figured they could just pile flowers or something up top (so it doesn't look plain).
Anyone out there who didn't get a cake topper? Or do you think it's better to get one so the cake isn't so plain? Where would I even get one at this stage of the game?

Re: Cake Toppers
I had fresh flowers on top and a lenox cake topper om the table with it. I dont think a cake topper is necessary. I've seen cakes both with and without. If you want fresh flowers just give your florist the heads up. Cake toppers you can find almost anywhere such as the wedding center, attias flea market, macys, etc. HTH

Re: Cake Toppers
hey, okay, first question for you, are you choosing a cake with your hall or are you having one done by an outside vendor (ie: cakes by J)? If you are having one done by a great baker like him, you may not need one at all, they do the entire cake top and all decorated. Don't get me wrong the hall cakes will be decorated thoroughly but since they tend to be a little on the plainer side, girls jazz them up with the topper. I had a topper, had I not, then the cake would have had flowers on top & that can look lovely as well, hth

Re: Cake Toppers
It depends what you want. My florist decorated the cake with flowers. I actually like it better than the cake toppers I saw. Here is a pic so you can have an idea. I know some people just put their cake toppers on the table as well.
My cake was from the hall but course the flowers and ribbon gave it the extra

Good point. The cake is being done by an outside vendor. My aunt won a $2,000 cake from Oheka Castle, and told me I could use it for my wedding. My hall normally does the cake for the wedding, but I told them we have this outside cake, and they said it's fine. So I'm meeting with Oheka and their pastry chef is going to do our cake and deliver it over to our hall. I'm not too familiar with the Oheka cakes, but I know they're supposed to be very nice (and it better be for $2,000). So I'm thinking they might be able to decorate it all nicely where I won't need one.
My grandmother had given me this cute cake topper thing years ago. It's a crystal Cinerella's coach with horses - I've actually seen it at Macy's recently. But I'm not too sure I want to use it as my cake topper. But I like the idea of maybe having it on the table placed next to the cake as others suggested.

I had swan swarovski cake toppers that my sisters got for the engagement, but we ended up getting a cake with a bow so we had to put the swans to the side. It is all up to you and your preference. I like something on top of the cake.

OOooo, you definitely don't have to worry about a cake topper! Your cake will be a work of art, I wish I could have afforded an outside vendors cake *sigh*...
Seriously though the top will be made with the same style and pizzazz as the rest, breathe easy
we're having a cake topper but many brides had fresh flowers. If you're planning on getting a topper ask your baker how heavy it can be. Our baker weighed ours just to make sure it wasnt too heavy and sink into the cake.
Dont feel pressured to get one if you dont want one. Just remember its your day!
