Cakes--who is good?
I think we're getting to the part of the wedding that FH is really excited about--it's the only part he's asked 'When do we GET to do that?' as opposed to 'When do we HAVE to do that?'
Anyway, are there any bakers that you girls can recommend? Specifically, I'm looking for someone who can make the 'Tiffany box' cake. I've found one baker in Hoboken, but I'm not sure I feel like traveling all the way to NJ. Thanks!!

My hall said they'll make my cake for $3.50 a slice, but they don't do cake tastings which is what FH is really looking forward to. All the rest of their food has been excellent, so I'm sure it would turn out okay but I also wouldn't mind finding someone who specializes in cakes. Thanks for the Cakeline tip!

Try http://www.weddingcakeonline.com/wedding.htmThey are the designated cake maker for my reception place. I know they do tastings, and it sounds like they will customize the cake for you. Good luck!

I agree. Our wedding cake was from Audreys and it was amazing.
As far as the tastings- no, they don't do them. However, most of their pastries contain their fillings. First we bought pastries and tried the different fillings. Then when we had narrowed it down to two, we purchased sample cakes. (2 separate times) They were $12 each and much larger than I would have thought. The only thing I do not know is if that price is the same for everyone. We got married at Flowerfield and Audreys is owned by the same company. And we had SO MUCH fun tasting the different types of cakes.
Our winning combo was- White cake with fresh raspberries and white chocolate moos (they were mixed together).

Here are the names of a few I looked at:Gail Watson
Sylvia Weinstock
Ron Ben Israel
Collette Foley
Bijoux-Doux
Cakeline
I am sure there are more if I keep thinking.
In the end I went with Carlos Bakery in Hoboken. I kept brushing them aside cause I didn't want to go to Jersey and I was afraid the cake would get injured traveling to LI, but I finally went and I am SOOO glad I did!
The cake was incredible. Beyond my expectations. So many people called/emailed that they could believe the cake was so good. It was the best they have ever tasted! Plus he did an incredible job with my sugar flowers, many guests took them home as keepsakes!

That cake looks good! The best cake I ever had at a wedding (and we all still talk about it - it was that good!) was made by St. Honore in Port Washington. We wanted to use them ourselves but the hall provides our cake. FM if you want contact info.

I used St Honore Pastry Shop in Port Washington - I used them for my shower, grooms and wedding cake. There are a number of girls on here who were at my wedding. I am out of town so my parents went to almost all of the places listed above and sampled their stuff (either tasting or bought cakes) they did not hold a candle to St Honore - it is a small shop - they provide all the pastery and cakes for all of the private country clubs on the North shore - I found this place because mulitple people recommended it to my family. They wanted only about $5-5.50 a slice compared to what everyone wanted to charge us OVER $10 for the identical cake.
Here are some photos - They DO a FREE cake tasting - you do have to call in advance to set it up but they are AMAZING to deal with.
I am sure that they can do the tiffany's boxes she is VERY talented.
People are still asking us where we got our cake so that they can get things from there for the holidays.
Our wedding cake - It was white cake soaked in Grand Marnier with Raspberry Mousse and Chocolate Mousse
Shower cake (my parents surprised me with this) it was lavander with a white bow.

Ours was from Baked to Perfection in Pt Washington and it was delicious (free tasting too). He said just give him a photo and he can do it.
