Calling all computer gurus - How do I get a movie clip onto a computer?

My boss has asked me to get a clip from the movie 'Annie Hall' onto his computer to use in a lecture he is giving. Does anyone have any clue how to do that?

You best bet is to download the movie from a file sharing service like Kazaa. That way you have the file digitially. Then you are going to need to have a movie viewer and basic editor to clip out just the part you want.

I would think that the Annie Hall DVD would have encoding to prevent people from using it so it would be more complicated to get that way.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a bit concerned about using Kazaa -- I work at a university and I think they have been targeted for law suits regarding copyright violations because of filesharing by students, etc. Yucky.

Well - I dont think you are legally allowed to use a movie clip for commercial purposes in the first place. Not sure but I dont think so. So you would have to violate some regulation to use it at all. If you were to pull it directly off the DVD, you would need to get special decrypting software which is also a violation.

Maybe someone else has a suggestion?

I told him when he asked me that I didn't think we could do that legally. He is not one that respects rules. Very frustrating, and awkward spot for me to be in!

You could also rent the DVD and get the clip that way. I agree, however, that using the clip for commercial purposes is illegal. You are definitely in a tight spot. I wonder if you could be held liable just because you created the presentation, or would it be just your boss...

How would I get the clip from the DVD? What software would I need?

I believe that the DVDs you buy at the video shop are encrypted so people cant just pull out pieces of them. In order to un-encrypt them, you need special 'pirate' software - and you would need to download that from the web in order to use it anyway.

Ive never tried to copy a DVD so I could be wrong...but it makes sense that they would protect a movie much like they would protect software, etc.. right?
