Calling all Early Intervention Providers (Homebased)

Have any of you incorporated? I heard that this is beneficial to do especially if you plan to take on a number of cases? If so, how do I go about doing this? What are the pros? Thanks in advance

I have heard that its beneficial if you are doing that full time... I only have 3 cases so I am not incorporated.

I work as an employee contractor b/c I only take a few cases, too. Right now I'm taking a break.

BTW, hey Lauren, I'll write you back soon...I've been so busy with getting my car fixed and working on the house!

My mom did this. I will tell you that she has a ridiculously hard time getting her money from the county. Like MONTHS go by and they don't pay her. At one point, the county owed her 50,000 dollars and she almost had to get a SECOND job She goes through hell, but makes twice as much money and doesn't have to answer to anyone. She is at the point though with the county where she wants to just say F-it and work for a school or something. YOu just have to develop a good relationship with the people in the county offices and usually that helps, too.

my dh is going to do this since he is a SEIT for a EI agency. he is an independant contractor working full time. the pros of incorporating: safety as far as liability-they can't come after your personal accounts, you can write off more, you can get rates for health ins as a small business...there are alot of advantages.

What qualifications are needed to work as an EI provider?

ETS: how do you get a position like this through the county??

dont go thru the county. contact an agency such as marion k. salomon, all about kids, theracare to name a few. you will get paid on time thru an agency. you need your masters, professional liability insurance, best practice certificate and a bunch of other things too. i just interviewed at marion k. salomon agency this morning for a PT SEIT position. i work full time in a private school, and now after school i will be providing EI services for 90 mins 3x a week for $90 a session.

Buttafli-you are an SLP, right? I don't know what kind of certifications you have. In general, most agencies want a CCC-SLP for EI, proof of continuing ed., malpractice (I forget the amounts I carry), best practices seminar (my agency arranged for me to get it), and workman's comp. (if you are an independent contractor). I believe they will hire TSHH for CPSE and call it SEIT Speech (the new way to refer to the same service just based on licensure). I work with Kidz Therapy and they have been great in terms of responding to me and getting paperwork/billing done. Many Nassau school districts use them. I have also heard good things about Paula Okin, Bilinguals, and Rothman & Rothman.

Well I think I'm going to incorporate soon....it just seems like the sensible thing to do with the number of cases that I'll have. Now does that mean my malpractice insurance needs to be under the corporation name?

Edited to add that I work through EI agencies not the county.

who are you going to see about getting incorporated?

I'm not sure on this one but I think malpractice is mainly on an individual but I think you can get it for a business as well. I'd check with the malpractice place you currently use to see what they offer/recommend. I'm with Marsh Affinity (part of Seabury & Smith).

This is the same one I am using....I actually just called and asked them what happens with the insurance after I incorporate and they said that I just have to send a written letter and proof of the corporation and then they will change it to the corporation name. It seemed like it wasn't a big deal if you changed it or left it.
