Can anyone recommend a website or have any tips?

LOL Jennbaby!!! I'm a 'wannabe' gardner.

I have more of a grey thumb than a green one!

Definitely give impatients a try! They're pretty easy to maintain and can fill flower boxes up fast! Double Impatients cost a little more, but they're gorgeous.

Pansies are also fairly easy to maintain and come in lots of colors!!! Or you can go with hydrangeas and then plant them in your yard when the summer comes to an end.

Any potting soil should do, although I used Schultz last summer and it just didn't retain moisture at all. I didn't like it at all.

Also try Petunias, last year I got the 'Tidal Wave' Petunias and they really grew nicely!

When you are gardening/cleaning how do you avoid disturbing bulbs that you may have planted?

for me it was easy last year cause i hadnt planted anything yet. I am not sure how to avoid the pre planted bulbs...

I think there is PLENTY of Garden chats on YAHOO, thats what i also did last year when i had questions..

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!

I found I did that alot last fall when I was planting new bulbs, I was using one of those bulb planters and kept chopping the pre-planted ones in half!

When cleaning.... do you remove old mulch remnants? Or can that be mixed right into the soil and then new mulch put on top?
I hope I don't have to sift it out of the soil....

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!

I am obsessed with planting on my deck! You cannot believe all the options! I don’t do my yard – my landscaper does that – hubby doesn’t let me get too creative out there…plus we get such an intense amount of sun that anything I ever tried to grow out there just fried.

But the deck is another story! I have had great experience with petunias. I LOVE them. The only thing is you have to deadhead them when the bloom dies – that’s how they rejuvenate. You don’t’ have to deadhead tidal wave petunias though – which makes them a great option. I love impatiens as well – but I must say the heartiest ones are the new guinea impatiens. They are HARD CORE! And they have a nice dark ivy green leaf that adds nice contrast. All time fave of last year was sweet potato vines. These things are amazing. They are this crazy chartreuse green almost neon color – they look beautiful with red geraniums and just grow all crazy and long. I also love the jasmine trees – you can buy one and just leave it in the planter it comes in. The smell is intoxicating – it really is. Oh! And white oleander is beautiful./ My tree made it through the winter if you can imagine indoors and is now getting ready to head out for Spring again!

Since there are a few seasoned gardeners here….anybody have any idea how to repel squirrels? I did run into a major problem last year where they dug up everything I planted out of the pots. It was devastating. After spending around $500 for everything – it was all over the deck every morning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (besides popping them one with a bb gun – which I am very close to doing!)

Can I plant the impatients if they are in direct sunlight? It gets really hot on the deck....

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!

they prefer a little shade, but should be fine if you water them tons. just stay on top of keeping them wet!.

What exactly are impatiens? The pretty little flowers that come in all diff colors?

they are very common - they come in pink, red, white, purple - sometimes they are striped.

Im a big planter too, considering hubby is a Landscaper.
You dont want to plant impatients now, it is still a little cold for them. They are great for the summer, and they can tolerate the heat very well. They need full sun. You may also want to plant begonias, and I love petunias. But these are summer flowers.

I LOVE spring flowers, you may want to plant some tulips, daffodils, and MY FAVORITE Hyacinths. They smell so good.

Good Luck, and happy planting

Are you growing a garden???

I cant wait to start!
I cleaned out one very overgrown bed along the side of the house yesterday. I was happy to find a few crocus in bloom! I think I am going to try some roses in that bed. I bought those $3.00 roses at Odd Job the last few years and they were great. You cant compare them to Jackson & Perkins starting out but they are hardy and look great in a few years. I love impatients for boarders and of course I will do some containers on the deck and front porch.
I am trying to decide on the placement for some vegetables Anyone have any tips on vegetables?

Does anyone in Western Suffolk know where the Bluepoint Cottage is? I was told that the Bayport Garden Club meets there the 4th Thursday of every month (at 7:00 PM) and I want to go, but haven't had much luck asking around to find out where the place is. Unfortunately the person that told me about it didn't know. For anyone with available days, I heard that Sayville's garden club meets on Monday mid-day - not sure which day of the month though.

I want to plant a few tomatos, red & green peppers, zuchini and maybe eggplant. I will need some herbs to go with that. I dont have that much space so I have to figure out where I am going to put all this stuff.

I love to plant Mint!! its one of the best, it grows and grows and grows, and there is nothing like making sun tea with a couple of mint leaves in the summer. and if you get really creative you can fill ice trays and plave a mint leaf in each cube and freeze it that way!! COMPANY LOVES THAT STUFFF!! LOL

i cant wait for planting season!!!

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!

a little herb garden is lots of fun. we have this old barrel that we plant thyme, rosemary, basil, mint, two types of parsley, cilantro and even some catnip for my babies!

We make Sunday gravy, so we can use fresh basil and parsley - it's so great...a little cilantro in a salad....some mint in an iced tea. And they grow so easily.

Man y'all got like, Ph.D's in wifeyhood! I don't know any of this stuff! Much to FH's chagrin, too.

How do I learn it all?
