Also go to the library, there is a WEALTH of info there on gardening for beginers.
What do you plan to do?

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
We have a few pots we bought and potting boxes made out of wood that are on the deck. Neither of us have ever planted anything. We just want some pretty flowers. Something easy to maintain.

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
Impatients are VERY easy to maintain, so are most of the prepotted annuals.. they need sun and water daily..
i rented the burpee garden book, ill see if i can get you the name, it listed EVERY garden flower and what is involved in taking care of them.. how much sun, ect..

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
I TOTALLY agree with the impatients!!! They are cheap and they grow like wildfire!! I put them up my walkway and they look soooo pretty. They are also very durable. If you neglect them (no water) as soon as you water them they come right back to looking as beautiful as ever!

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
We went to Hicks yesterday, they had a big sale. I WAS just going to buy pots for plants i already have, but i ended up buying more plants! I got some Posies and Violas. And some dracaenas. We can't plant them outdoors but i bought a nice window planter for them. Also bought some begonias. Those are good too. Go to bhg.com and go to garden. Also at the Garden World website, they have some links for other websites. Garden world

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
Here I am here I am! I am very interested in learning how to garden! FH laughs at me and says he will believe it when he sees it.
Our landlord (and FH's best friend) told me I can do whatever I want to his front yard in the way of planting. Someone help me! Where do I start? If I plant stuff this weekend, what will bloom when?

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
Start by cleaning the yard.. i made that mistake last year, i didnt clean the yard, what a mess!!!
Clean out all weeds and dead bush roots, and make sure the soil is good for growing.. start outlining the beds.. thats one thing i wish i would have done last year... start by watering the soil and grass after the last frost which is also when you can start to plant... I buy impatients and annuals from Franks usualy, sometimes hicks if i want to make the drive (last year i bought a BEAUTIFUL verdana from there and hung it on my tree!! its soo pretty..) I also go to the local nursery they have good deals, and i ALWAYS use mirical grow it really does make the impatients bushy!!!

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
The best thing about the smaller gardening stores is that its usually owned and operated by people who know their stuff.. so when you go to buy some, tell them the situation and they will DEFINATLY steer you in the right direction.. Feb. Yes potting soil is what you need if your planting in pots..
If your soil in your yard is not optimal, once you rake it take out the garbage like over grown roots and start to water it, it will get better and then you can fill it in with planting soil... believe me i am not even a beginier, i just learned all this last year...its so much fun...you will need tools as well... i suggest NOT buying these from a gardening store, but from target or kmart, they are less expensive there!!

Re: Calling all Green thumbs!
We finally bought a rake yesterday. I went outside to start, worked for about 45 min. and I think I got maybe 1/4 of the backyard done. I literally started to get teary eyed. I just kept thinking - this is a mans job!!!! And that there was no way I was going to finish it under 6 hours. I went to DH and told him that we need to **** it up, pay a landscaper to do the spring clean up/fertilizing (I hear around 70 bucks), and I will do the gardening part. So I really need to do this (and I want to as well).
