Calling all Independent Providers (special instrucion, speech ect.)
I want to start getting back into this because I could use the extra cash and I just have a few questions....Is it better to set up a corporation when doing this? If you didn't do you have to pay workers comp? I know you have to take out insurance. Anything else I should know before i call. When I did it in the past I didn't have to do any of this? I want to start calling some agencies on Monday. Thanks!

Re: Calling all Independent Providers (special instrucion, speech ect.)
when I do EI (SLP) I work through an agency. Since I am considered an employee contractor not an independent contractor, I don't need workman's comp. and they take out the taxes for me (I don't have to do quarterly or at tax time). This works for me. I like my agency a lot, no complaints here. Both independent and employee contractors don't have to be incorporated, as far as I know. I, of course, carry malpractice ins. Hope that helps! Good luck!

i do CPSE and CSE thru 2 different agencies. One agency considers me an employee so they take out taxes and the other considers me an independant provider-so I have my own malpractice insurance.

Can someone please FM the names of some of these agencies. I would like to do some side work as well. Can you have a f/t job and still work through the private agencies??

I would definitely start by getting the insurance (most agencies won't let you work without it)... also are you an approved provider (Department of Health) for Early Intervention? If not, you should look into getting approval from the DOH. As far as the corporation thing, I have been told that if you are doing that full time, then yes, you need to. If you are just taking one or two cases for after work, then its not necessary. Depending on your agency, and whether or not taxes are taken out for you, you may have to file quarterly (or just expect to pay a lot in taxes at the end of the year). Good luck!!

I believe you can only do EI as a licensed SLP, but you might be able to contract with an agency for CPSE as a TSHH.

you may be able to do CPSE as a TSHH. some agencies will arrange for you to do Best Practices for DOH.
