Calling all out of town brides....
If you live out of town and did not buy your dress on LI, do you plan on just carrying it with you on the plane if you are flying home for the wedding??

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
I'm not sure what I'm doing. I'll prbably drive up to LI since I am in DC. If I do fly, I am afraid of it getting smushed on the plane. I've heard of people mailing it with tons of insurance on it but what if it still gets lost?
Where are you flying from?

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
We are coming in from Dallas, TX. I thought of mailing it, but that one small chance of it getting lost makes me nervous. I think at this point i may just carry it on the plane and hope that noone is sitting next to me on the flight so I can lay it on the seat next to me.

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
Hi : )At first i was getting married out of NY and I spoke to a few airlines about my bringing my dress. If you call up the airlines the day before you leave most of them will put your dress either in a first class coat closet or one of the flight attendants closets so it won't get squished.

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
My dress shop shipped it to NY the week before our wedding so that it had plenty of time to get there. Plus, since they shipped it, they were responsible for it. But on the way home we just carried it with us.

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
I live in DC, too, and am definitely driving up to NY for the wedding.I wonder, though, if you can get an inexpensive flight, maybe on Southwest, could you even just buy an extra seat and use it for your dress? It might be cheaper to get a one-way ticket than to ship it! On the other hand, Southwest might not be a good option, either, due to the 'cattle call' seating and the fact that you can't really reserve a seat, even if you DO buy more than one...
Hmm, this is a toughie.
In any case, it's good to hear there's more of us planning from out-of-town. I feel so left out sometimes...

DDUNE23: I'm coming from Dallas, Texas too. :)I'm am having Sak's send it to the one in NYC and I'll get them to press it. So all I'll have to do is carry take it to the hotel. I thought about it maybe getting lost so I'm having it sent a few weeks ahead. And if it does I'm really gonna hurt somebody.

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
I bought my dress before I'm moving down to Florida where my fiance lives. I did not want my dress anywhere near my new home for fear that he would look.So when my dress comes in, i will fly up and have my fittings and visit my family.
I wanted to make sure I got a lot done before I moved.

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
I bought my gown at the Priscilla of Boston that is located in Boston, had the fittings done in Boston, but then had them ship it to their Long Island store to be steamed and picked up...Shipping in way in advance with Fed Ex and insurance to somewhere that can steam it for you is probably the best bet.

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
oooohhh, you guys are giving me something else to think about!!! I haven't started thinking about my dress yet, but I was wondering if I should go shopping here where I live (Rochester, NY) or doen on LI. Upstate would save me $$$, but as Sheppy sais, my MOm would not be here for fittings, etc...hmm. tough one, thank goodness I have lots of time!

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
If I was in Rochester I would definately buy it on LI if you want your mom to be able to join you. It is not that far, plus I'm sure you'll be taking trips there quite often. My distance away is not driving, so I have only been home once so far for wedding planning! AHhhh!I think I decided to ship it. Lugging it on the plan makes me more nervous than shipping it. It is so heavy and bulky...I just had to get that montrous train!

Re: Calling all out of town brides....
Only once. I know! Crazy! I think one of the hardest parts of planning is finding your reception site and I knew I wanted it at the Milleridge at x-mas time every since I had worked there. So that was easy. Then I went off alot of the advice from the ladies here, would send my parents to check out vendors and pre-screen them for me. It actually hasn't been that bad. My job is so slow that I plan the wedding all day. I was home for a week in August and did all the things you do here and there in one week. Will be home at Thanksgiving for a week to finalize things and then not again until Dec 21...wedding is 12/29. I'm cool and collected...it is all under control!

wow...doreen - you are super organized and have very dedicated parents! My parents helped me a lot too, but I still came home once a month during our engagement.I ordered my dress on Long Island and just flew home from California once a month for plans and fittings...worked out fine for me, plus I couldn't fathom having to fly with my dress.
