I'm a teacher too!! I LOVE IT!! I taught Kindergarten the past two years and now I teach third grade! (I live upstate though, so I'm no help as far as salaries/districts). Since I live and work in farmland (hee hee) we get paid squat. Starting salary is 28,000...and get this...when you get your Master's, your salary only goes up $600. WHAT?!? I almost flipped out, b/c I am paying over 20K to do my Master's up here. It doesn't seem fair.
My good friend teaches Kindergarten in Rockville Center and she has her Master's degree already....well, her starting salary is $53,000!!!!!!! AUUUGGGHHHHH!! I am soo jealous!

i am a high school teacher & definitely agree with the girls about starting salaries! in my district, $42, 600 starting with a bachelor's, $50,000 with a master's. a friend of mine was in the business world for quite some time & decided to go into teaching. she took classes ( i think at NYIT or Pace) at night to get her certification (about 20 credits, i believe), did her student teaching for one semester, and began teaching full time while finishing her master's at night. it seemed like the quickest route to teaching. she teaches high school business classes in a western nassau high school. you must get certified first ( which means classes in addition to your bachelor's degree at a local college), and you must get your master's degree (eventually) to teach in a public school. this can be done at night while you're working, but you also must do student teaching (no pay, full time, can't hold another job). if you go to school full-time you could finish in a little over a year, i think. check out the NYS dept. of education website. i got my master's from queens college & highly recommend it. oh, teaching in NYC schools is quite different than on the island, as i'm sure you know! i would say that it is a competitive field, my school turns away many many applicants each year, but so far it looks like the girls on this board have been lucky! let me know if i can be of any help.

My year would be great, but I have a parent who is kicking up all kinds of controversy with the district (miraculuosly leaving ME out of the mess SO FAR), and it's very hard for me because I feel as though I'm walking on eggs all the time, waiting to get sucked into the sauce, so to speak.

BUT.... my children are REALLY fantastic. They have already completely bonded as a class, and are wonderful to watch as they play.

I'm glad you love your class. It makes coming to work more enjoyable! I hope your year continues on in the same way.

I teach HS as well...and have taught both in NYC (Queens) and am now in LI...while the salary is much better now for me...my district is about the same as spell...$43K and $50K

but I have to tell you...the good school sin the city are the best...I was in the #1 neighborhood HS in NYC and with the exception of class size...it was great...I left for money...but there was a price to pay...administration is always up your @ss on LI...that feeling jenn described about walking on eggshells can happen frequently...I never felt that way in the city...

a friend of mine had her 36 credits in a subject area and went ot queens college for a quick certification program...you do your 18 or so education credits...and then student teach...done in a year...but then still have to do your masters...

if you are willing to teach math...you could start right away...if you have the 36 credits...and I could put in a good word at my old HS...

I'm also a career changer...I was in the fashion world and then decided to go back for teaching. That was 2 years ago and now I'm student teaching at an elementary school in TriBeca this semester. In December I'll have my Master's and then I have to find a job. AAHHH!!!! I think finding one in the middle of the year is going to be touch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. I have my bachelor's & master's in marketing. All I need to get is an 18 credit certification, student teach, and then I would be able to teach business courses in a public school?

I've been contemplating a career change, but really didn't want to have to get another master's...

You also have to take those teaching Exams..LAST, and ATS-W. As well as attend Child Abuse Seminar, amd also now a Violence Prevention seminar.

I have my bachelors in Math and just startd takng education classes at dowling. Do I not need to student teach first? Could I just start teaching math now? Are math teachers in that high of demand?

gab...if you want to teach in NYC...you could start right now (file for temp license and get fingerprinted)

if you get your NYC license...email me and I'll put you in touch with a good HS in queens (always looking to fill spots...preganancies, sabbaticals...etc...)

after two years of teaching...that replaces your student teaching requirement (i think) and you can get your NYS license...

double check though...rules are ALWAYS CHANGING!!!
