Calorie Restriction - could you do this and would you want to?

Calorie restriction or Caloric restriction (CR) is the practice of limiting dietary energy intake in the hope that it will improve health and retard aging. In human subjects, CR has been shown to lower cholesterol, fasting glucose, and blood pressure. Some consider these to be biomarkers of aging, since there is a correlation between these markers and risk of diseases associated with aging...CR is the only known dietary measure capable of extending maximum lifespan, as opposed to average lifespan. In CR, energy intake is minimized, but sufficient quantities of vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients must be eaten. To emphasize the difference between CR and mere 'FR' (food restriction), CR is often referred to by a plethora of other names such as CRON or CRAN (calorie restriction with optimal/adequate nutrition), or the 'high-low diet' (high in all nutrients aside from calories, in which it is 'low').

I read the article last week and I was intrigued at first glance. Then after reading the entire thing, I know for a fact I could not live like that.
What got me really thinking is, why on earth would I want to live so much longer than my loved ones. I'd have no one that I love around me to enjoy 100 with.
That is how I rationalize the macaroni and cheese I had the other day.

The people in the article are fanatical about it - it's almost like a substitute for religion to them. Especially with the 'Isn't his orange skin pretty?'

honestly, they are nutso. there is something severely messed up in their brains...OCD to the umpteenth power.

there is NO WAY you can know for certain if you are going to live a long life. I don't want a bus to run me over next week, and have my last thought be 'I wish I would have ENJOYED my life' austerity is NOT the spice of life for me.

I live for food. What is the point of living longer if I have no food to look forward to (yes that is an unhealthy perspective on food, but I LOVE It as clearly indicated by my excessive amount of threads on chai tea and Panera bread)?

I wish I could do that... but I think the hunger would catch up with me after a while and I'd binge like crazy!
