Can a friend of ours officiate our ceremony?

We are getting married in Bayville, NY (Nassau County) in July, 2011 and wondering if we can have a friend officiate our wedding. Anyone know how this can be done, or if this can be done at all?

Thanks,

Josh

Your friend would have to be certified to do it. You can check online to see what the certification process is but it's not legal unless an actual officiant, whether it be a friend or someone you hire, performs the ceremony...they have to file papers with the town so you can receive your marriage certificate. HTH :)

My brother (a clergyman in the Secular Humanist church) has performed two weddings. All you need is to be certified. He likes doing it so much, and he usually does it for free (instead of giving a wedding present)!
