Maybe it is the time of the year or maybe I am getting that 7 year burn out that I have heard about but I cannot take it!
I used to love middle school but to be honest I am sooooooo sick of the 12 year old drama. Every year it just gets worse! I am sick of gettin upset when I hear about these kids doing sexual things at 12. I am sick of getting upset when I hear about these kids drinking and doing other things at 12!
I am sick of giving up my lunch period to help these kids only to be stabbed in the back and then be called a biatch by their 12 year old punk a sses. Then I have to deal with their parents when the deans gives them detention for saying sexual stuff to each other!
So please some remind me of why I did this to myself! I wish FH made more money so I would not have to work anymore

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
My fh is a NYC teacher in East New York- he teaches emotionally disturbed children k-8 and it looks like it is the same no matter where and who u teach. He says the same thing.Just think next week is spring break and then 2 more months till June. Teachers really do not get respect or the money they deserve, I come from a family full of teachers.

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
i hear ya sista!
my situation is a little bit different, yet i am sure we can all relate. i just hate to go to work in the morning. i dread getting up. i love the kids i teach, but, i am really burned out. i would love to look for a district position, as i teach in a private spec ed school, but my FH is looking for a new job in a district now, so i am holding on for one more year. i really dont think i can take it for much longer.

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
I'm a sped teacher and I am burned out too. I have first grade though. By this time of year, I'm so thankful of the upcoming vacation. THe thing that helps me through is thinking about how my kids were last year (I have them for 2 years) and the difference of how they are now. THey have even grown so much since sept.
The reason you probably became a teacher is probably teh same one as me.... because you love kids, want to make a difference in the world, and are selfless. Believe it or not, you are impacting these kids greatly. They may not think of it now as their hormones are raging, but you will make a difference in their lives that they will remember when they are older. THey are just too young now to appreciate all teh hard work you put in for teir wellbeing!
Don't give up! April break is just around the corner!

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
I'm not a teacher yet, but just graduated in December and have been looking for a teaching job ever since. NO ONE IS HIRING with all the cuts and it may not even open up at all for Fall 03! I am now working 3 jobs including subbing to make ends meet.....I don't know if that's what you were looking for (the grass is always greener, I guess) and I don't know if that will make you feel better, but what we do have in common is the wish that DH/FH had a better job so we don't have to work at all!!!!! I wish this each day I get called to sub! Cheer up! You have the summer and retirement w/ a pension to look forward to! Feel better! Vacation is coming too!

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
Thank you Kelly,
Yes those are the reasons that I got into teaching, but so many of my students these days have issues that I can't help! They are too many and too big. My one class is so bad that the deans office, guidance and pupil services shakes their head when they look at my class roster. But have they done ANYTHING to correct the problem-NOPE! My phone log has moved into a second binder! There are not enough hours on a day and I think that I care too much! UGH I need a drink!

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
I just find it said that I am already saying 23 more years!
I used to love 7th grade and I have a reputation as being an outstanding 7th grade teacher. I have had multiple brothers and sisters and cousins from the same families. So sadly, last year when I thought about transfering to the 9th grade building I was told that the principal would not let me go not my DC.
I think with all the wedding stress. the SD and CSE meetings that I have had to deal with this year is definitely part of it.
Peggy, my district is starting next year to do a cooperative model (depending if the budget passes), because of this they are probably going to need about 3-4 new SPED teachers. I will FM you the information for my district if you want.

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
I am not a teacher but here it is from a former student point of view of why I am glad you are a teacher.
My kindergarden teacher tought me everything I needed to know. She taught me my alphabet by singing the 'A alligators all around' song, she tought me compassion, sharing, colors, life and friendship.
My 6th grade teacher taught me if you put your mind to it anything is possible. All your dreams can be a reality if you focus, go to school and continue to learn
My 8th grade english teacher tought me their is a whole world out their and someone's gotta write about it. He taught me to write what I feel and to just never stop writing. It was because of him that I have a passion to write.
My HS Italian teacher showed me Italy without leaving the classroom. She was that one zany teacher everyone has but you never forget a thing she taught you. She marched to a beat of her own drummer and loved what she did.
My HS band teacher taught me that music goes deeper then the sounds it makes. It is words, its feelings, its expression, its people working together to make harmony.
My college professors all taught me that they do care. They have office hours for us the students and will sit and talk with us no matter what the situation is. They care when you think they dont.
The teachers I mentioned above were the ones who had the most impact on my life today and those who inspired me to greatness. All of them took the time to either sit with me and go over a math problem, talk about that little marigold we grew in the classroom, class trips, or put that sticker on our tests when we got a 100. Their caring made the world a much better place.
At that time I didnt think much of my teachers but many years later I couldnt be where I am without them. Teachers inspire, care and make the world a much better place.

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
Thank you for that Chip-- I think I needed that. I am the Italian teacher, except that I teach Spanish! The first two months of school, I swear my students think that I am insane. But last Monday I was at a SD at HS in my district and I ran into 2 former students. They hugged me hello gushed over me and said Señorita, Remember all the crazy songs you used to make us sing; I still remember them and they helped me pass a test the other day! That made my day and I guess I should remember things like that! That was also the same day that 3 former students that are now in college came back to visit me!
I love my kids and I guess I am taking this girl talking badly about me to heart! I know that she has major issues. She was red flagged coming in from the elementary school. It is just so difficult to have to defend yourself when you didn't do anything other than try to help.
But, I am starting to feel better or the beer is starting to kick in!

Just remember those students and it will make teaching a much better thing. Their was a song my Italian teacher taught us and I still remember it.
Dont let that one student bring you down. Their are many more students out their who appreciate everything you do

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
I'm a Speech Improvement Teacher for a High School. I love what I do, and I love my students. I thought High School would be too much for me to take on, but a majority of the students are great. It's so easy to get attached to them. It's horrible that there are going to be alot of cuts wih the Board of Ed., or should I say the Dept. of Ed. Thousands of people don't know if they will have a job in Sept. When I was looking for a teaching job, I was originally looking for an elementary ed position. There was a freeze on hiring. Can you believe that NYC, the city that was in demand for teachers had a freeze?? SSoooo I decided to use my Speech Pathology degree and go for a Speech Teacher. I know someone else mentioned that they couldn't get a teaching position and was subbing. I used to sub too before I got my position. Are you on the registry for a specific district?? It' pot luck when you sub. I can't wait till this mayor is done with. I know that I am sooo looking foward to my week and a half off and summer vacation. Lots of Luck Ladies!!!

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
Buttafli: currently I am on only one districts list, primarily because I student taught there. Next year I am probably going to go on another districts list as well. Its so amazing how you think if you work so hard to get straight A's for your masters and then no one is hiring. Many of the people I graduated with all agree that we never thought it would be so difficult. Subbing doesn't pay much, so you run ragged working two other jobs to keep up the lifestyle! (sorry mini vent!) Are you going to Albany on may 3?

Re: Can any of my fellow teachers...
This is off-topic, but can someone tell me what a resource room teacher is? Do they teach a class or is it a group that gets one-on-one attention while they do extra work or homework?
