Can anyone recommend a pediatric gastroenterologist?

My DH and I have finally come to the conclusion that we would like another dr to take a look at our son to rule out any other problems. Our normal dr's tell us he had colic and now has gone into teething, but I honestly don't feel that he can be this unhappy for the whole 5 months of his life, all the time.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a pediatric gastroenterologist? I can look find someone in my plan (Empire) but I was hoping someone could recommend an excellent Dr. THANKS!!!!!

I think TammyJill took her daughter to one. Maybe you want to send her a FM and ask her for a recommendation. I hope everything turns out ok.

I can't recommend a doctor, but do you have any idea what it might be? does he have any trouble with his bowel movements? I ask because I know of two people who have had a rare problem called Hurschsprung's Disease (not sure of spelling) where the nerve endings joining the lower intestine with the rectum are effectively dead or numb. The person does not feel what a normal person feels when they have to go to the bathroom, so basically, they don't, which causes major back-ups and blockages to the whole gastric system. One of these people is my uncle in law. He's about 34, and he was first diagnosed as a child, after much confusion about what might be wrong. Unfortunately, at the time, not much was known about the problem and he spent a lot of time in the hospital (we're talking months at a time) and the multiple surgeries he had have left his stomach severely scarred - poor guy has no belly button He still has to watch what he eats - no rice or nuts or anything particularly binding and he has to take fiber drinks like Metamucil.

The good news is that the other person I know with this disease is a two year old boy. He was diagnosed and then had a minor procedure performed mostly with fiber optics through the belly button and a small incision to the side of his lower abdomen. They basically just cut out the damaged nerves and reattach the lower intestine to the rectum.

I know this is a lot of information for something that might not even be your problem, but it's worth checking out. It is an extremely painful condition and a little guy wouldn't be able to tell you what's wrong.

Hope this helps!
Good luck!!!

Dr Chawla at Stony Brook. She is amazing!!! I love her, my daughter had failurew to thrive and sever acid reflux with a milk allergy. She was calming and knowledgableable. Many of my family members work at Stony Brook University Hospital and they highly recommend her, many top specialists recommend her as well!!

I second for Dr. Chawla at Stony Brook. My daughter has been going there since she was released from the NICU. My nephew sees Dr. Lowenstein (I think that is the name) who is Dr. Chawla's partner.
