Can anyone recommend nice, not too expensive hotels in venice and rome?

So excited...DH and I are planning an Italy trip. We like to start in Venice, then Rome, and finish in Naples to visit family.

Any hotel suggestions for Venice/Rome that's nice and not too expensive would be helpful. I have no idea where stay.

when i went years ago with a student tour, we stayed at the Grand Palatino...it was very classy compared to other places we had stayed in Paris. The dinig room is to die for- we felt very out of place in our jeans.
Also, very centerally located- we walked to the trevi, the spanish steps etc.

Both are nice & affordable.
