If youre looking for an out of this world and i really do mean the best coffee maker (im a real coffee person) then its Jura Capresso. Its swiss made and we got it at williams sonoma. It makes espresso and coffee. Heres a picture of it.

I swear by Farberware's Percolator coffee makers---- THEY MAKE THE BEST COFFEE!! so much better than a drip machine .
If you are wanting a little more economical, I have the Cuisinart Brew Central and adore it. NO problems, its pretty, and yummy cafe!

we registered for this one.. it's a Braun Aroma Deluxe 10 Cup Coffee Maker for $69.99.. My sister has a similar one and it's great...

I'd suggest the Cuisinart Grind & Brew 10-cup coffemaker...
It has a built in grinder to grind fresh coffee beans, and a special feature where you can pour a cup before the full pot has brewed...
Also, a French Press makes delicious coffee!
As for espresso machines... for something high-end, I'd go with the DeLonghi Magnifica -- which automatically grinds and brews espresso... has a cappucino frother, and makes the most delicious espresso which is great alone, in a cappucino, or latte! You can basically make most of the starbucks drinks with that.... my FH always makes me the BEST vanilla soy lattes!
