Can I ***** about a friend??

Can I ***** about a friend??

Anyway, I've been doing my darndest to rid myself of this boat anchor of a friend for quite some time now (she makes outright digs to me, innuendos about her and my husband and rips to shred every real friend she's ever had). I've tried open insults, hastily hanging up or finding excuses not to talk to her; nothing is working.

Last night she wanted to come over and 'visit' and see the baby, blah, blah, blah. Running out of excuses myself, I decided to suck it up and let her come by. What a mistake. Within minutes of her arrival, I was getting that tightening in my stomach as she walked around and made back-handed comments about my house 'Gee, I wish I could have a house like this, it must be nice to have EVERYTHING you want' (in a condescending tone). As she's looking over the baby, she's like 'Well, you're life must be VERY limited now, unlike me who can travel anywhere I want to' (yeah on Mom and Dad's dime since you haven't WORKED in a year and they pay for everything). Comments along these lines continued all night and I just shut down. She acts like a four year old and I was totally embarrassed because we were in a diner and she openly farted, making my husband break out in laughter. Everyone was looking over in disgust, meanwhile she thought she was the greatest thing going. She feeds into his adolescent behavior and that's where she finds her 'connection' with him. Throughout the night, her cell phone kept ringing and she would stop and start all conversations (which were limited to begin with) to catch up with whoever was on the phone. She kept insisting I have a major party because we got a pool and I looked at Bob and shook my head. My 'major party' days are over. I'm not 21 anymore and this isn't a free for all, it's my home. She looked like it was a chore to be around us, since we're so dull now that we're responsible parents and homeowners. She even told one of her friends, she'd catch up with them when she was 'done' here. Please....don't let us hold up your plans. We only see you 2x a year.

She's rude, immature, obnoxious and I have absolutely nothing in common with her anymore. She's also 32 years old.

So someone please tell me, how do I give this girl the kiss of death? I find nothing appealing about maintaining ANY relationship with her. Hubby thinks I'm being unreasonable because she seems to want to hang on. For what purpose, I'm not sure. Maybe to make herself feel better because I don't say anything back when she pulls her crap on me? It's definitely time to move on.

I think you need to just come right out and tell her - you don't have much in common anymore and her comments are mean and hurtful - you'd rather not see her anymore.

I mean, really, hwat have you got to lose? If you feel bad about hurting her, just think of how much she's hurt you. If she gets mad, and you lose her as a friend, well, then mission accomplished!

I would just flat out tell her that she is no longer welcomed in my house. Reasons why...we have nothing in common and I don't appreciate your nasty comments. Sometimes unfortunately you have to be honest and not beat around the bush. Good luck with her!! Just reading this made me

Don't answer the phone when she calls?

Or, just tell her off.

Nobody needs that type of negativity in their home - certainly not near a child. Chalk it up to experience and do not go out of your way to see her. If she asks, then say 'I am sorry but I don't think its a good idea.'

I would avoid her calls, emails, visits, etc and stop reciprocating any communication.

If she finally confronts you, then I would come right out and say 'You are a very negative person so I don't feel a need to stay friends with you'. If necessary, give her exact examples like you gave us.

This is probably what I would do too. I am not really comfortable telling people directly that I don't like them, but if confronted and asked for the truth, I will give it.

hey Sharon...I had a friend like that once...i finally told her that we are in different stages of our lives...and right now I need to focus on my new family and house....and I dont have time for her drama....I had previously tried more subtle methods...but she is so self invovled that she missed all the hints i sent out...so I finally just came out and told her that I think its best if we go our seperate ways since we no longer have anything to contribute to the friendship.

SHARON! If you have a problem with me, why did you have to air on on PUBLIC forum?

it was only a little fart...hardly anyone heard it
Those guys at the next booth thought it was SEXY!

JK!

OMG Sharon, this girl puts the 'ick' in 'Toxic Friend'

BLAH!

I had a friend like that, just disparaging everything I do, same immaturity issues, same rude self centered behavior. Eventually I just had to tell him 'I'm tired of you doing x, y and z' and it ruend into a huge fight b/c obviosuy he had NO idea what I was talking about. I told him not to contact me again, and when he called and I ignored it he got the hint fairly quickly. Now he's out of my life and it's been I think 2 years but I still feel that the weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.

I know this is extreme and you don't want to hurt soeone's feelings no matter how destructive they are, but sometimes it's necessary. After several years of friendship with this guy, I too was running out of excuses.

I'll just leave you with

You're too funny Jenn!! Thanks so much for the insight everyone. I guess I have to be the bad guy and tell her the truth. Even Bob admitted her behavior was obnoxious last night and he is oblivious to everything!

WOW!!! I am a very timid person at times and I'd go the not calling her back route, but if that doesn't work, I would tell her that she is rude and her comments are nasty and you just don't think you have anything to talk about anymore.

I can't believe the way she acts!! WOW!
