Can i do whatever i want with my registry?

Can i do whatever i want with my registry?

I am trying to be accomidating to everyone's budget. I don't have alot of money, and i don't expect others to spend gobs and gobs on me.

Now, i LOVE to cook and bake. So for my registry i am sort of looking at this as an opportunity to really get some nice high end items perhaps for our new home in the future. Is it okay to go for a china set that is $119 pp setting?

I feel sort of guilty, but if this is a once in a lifetime kind of deal here, i want to be able to get the best but not go too overboard. That china pattern i fell in love with and i could go cheaper, but should i compromise?

What did you guys do? Especially for the bakers and cooks out there, did you go all out, or did you hold back a bit?

Also: Did any of you add furniture? Like a bedroom set? Or is that tacky?

I ran into a similar problem. I didn't hold back, registered for all of the things I really wanted and plan to use. Added a ton of other items like towels, small kitchen items, bathroom stuff.....etc. There is something to fit everyone's budget. I've already received a pot set and my kitchen towels. (total opposite ends of spectrum on the price scale!!!) Hope that helps. Most fine china runs at least $100 a setting, but they go on sale all the time!!!

register for whatever you want. if people don't want or can't afford to buy something they won't

YES! I think that sounds pretty standard. Not to mention a lot of (smart) people will look other places to get the same setting at a discount. For example my place settings were about $110 at Fortunoff where I registered and were Lenox but my MIL got them through Bed Bath and Beyond, used a coupon, and got a better deal (and I got more settings )
I say get things you really love and will use for a long time, this is the only time to ask for things you wouldn't normally get yourself

definitly register for whatever you want! sometimes people go in together for the more expensive items so you never know what you could get as a gift. also a lot of places offer registry completion discounts, where they offer something like 10% off everything left on your registry after your wedding for you to buy.

Register for whatever you want.

1. You never know what people will buy you.
2. Even for big ticket items, if you want it that badly, after the wedding date you'll get a coupon for a discount on items so you might be able to buy the furniture yourself if you have the money.

Oh here'z my 2 cents, but keep in mind I live in MI.....$119pp for china..WAY to expensive. I would never ask for it. I would not ask for furniture either. An air bed ofr guests is one thing but a bedroom set, dining table and chairs is another. IMHO it's very greedy unless someone asks specificly. If you love to bake/cook go crazy with cookware or baking supplies. William Sanoma has some awsome stuff. Ask for a Kitchen Aid, nice pots/pans, good bakeware...I guess I looked at it like this. If I wouldn't buy it off of a reg then I didn't add it.

I didn't hold back either as long as it was something that DH and I would use.. we had items on our registries that ranged from $9.99 to $500.00!

Those closer to you will buy the higher ticket items btw.. also if they know that you're going to use it then I wouldn't worry about it.

$119 is fine per place setting, I think.

But yeah - furniture - couches, bedroom sets, etc. seem a bit over the top...

mine china is 129 a setting... but it was what I liked... I don't feel bad about it - if someone can't afford it, they have other options on there

I agree about the furniture. I don't have any furniture on my registry or want to add, but i just wanted some advice on that as well.

I used to live in Michigan, so i can understand where your coming from lol But, from what i had to choose from, that was the higher end of the lower end ya know? And it was pretty =D If no one wants to buy it for me then i have no problem with that, i just didnt know if people were going to turn their noses to my registry and go 'ugh, i cant believe she expects someone to pay 119pp for china'.

I guess i care too much about what other people think.

Oh well, thank you girls for the comments, i will remember this when i am adding more to my registry.

I agree, and i know i shouldn't really care lol but i would rather someone buy me my kitchenaid and bedding and stuff like that, rather than furniture lol

I will be able to cook, i may not be able to sleep anywhere, but i can cook!!!!

Re: Can i do whatever i want with my registry?

Register for what you really want! You will be surprised what people will get you. However, don't go totally overboard and make sure you do have some things in lower price ranges as well.... even if that means registering for 6 'place settings' and 6 settings where you register for the pieces individually (ex: 6 dinner plates, 6 saucers, 6 salad plates, etc.)

As for the $119/setting china, it depends on your guests. We registered for our e-party and received almost all of our $119/setting china. My grandma bought us 11 place settings... at the time she got BBB to honor Fortunoff's 'free soup bowl w/ purchase of a place setting' promotion + they allowed her to use their 20% off coupons even though they say they exclude Lenox, and then she ended up getting their own promotion as well to her surprise ($50 gift card in the mail for every $200 of lenox purchased) so she made out really well! She used the gift cards to buy 6 of our matching accent plates. We also had guests buy our creamer, sugar, one open veg bowl, a platter, the other 6 accent plates, and the 12th place setting (also with free soup bowl).

People apparently really like to buy china

for the rest of the registry, our items REALLY vary. we had some expensive kitchen items like a high-end toaster oven, a food processor, some nice pots/pans, a dyson, but also some very inexpensive glassware, dishtowels, kitchen utensils, dessert plates, everyday dishes ($4-7 each), dipping bowls ($1.50 a set of 4). Most of our registry items are under $30. Our bedding is on the pricey side but FH's family is from OOT and most want to give gifts and not money for our wedding gifts, so we might get it. It's not a set, it's listed as individual pieces which should help. I'd rather have nice bedding than a kitchenaid mixer because I don't bake. We put a nice kitchenaid hand mixer instead.

Moral of the story is... put what you want, but make some variety.

which china pattern did you like?

Thank you, and i liked the Lenox Venetian Lace china. I figured it was classy and sophisticated, yet i could pair it with something modern and i think it would still go well together.

your guests have to remember that your registry is a 'wish list' of all the items you would love to have. if they think something is too expensive, they can always give you a gift card towards a piece of your china or pots & pans

I agree with what the other girls are saying about registering for whatever you want, however you need to think about it in terms of possibly not getting a complete set. If onyl six settings of your china gets bought and you wanted twelve, are you willing to spend the extra $120 per setting for the extra six? Just something to think about...

I actually have a lot of items on my registry because I have a guestlist of 300 ppl...so I sorta went all out....
but my price ranged from $9.99 to $200.00 for the most expensive
