I am having a Greek orthodox ceremony and just heard that i am not allowed to show my shoulders in church. Does anyone know if that is true? I will be a little upset because I think it takes away from a dress. Thanks for any help.

Re: Can I show my shoulders?
I was just at a Greek Orthodox wedding in Reading PA the day after Christmas and the bride wore a strapless gown.

Re: Can I show my shoulders?
It depends on which Church. I know that St. Nick's in Bayside will not let you show your shoulders (they sent me a packet when we thought we were going to be married there which said that specifically). However, our church St. Paul's Cathedral in Hempstead will (I called and asked before I ordered my dress).
ETA: St. Nick's and St. Paul's are both Greek Orthodox churches.

Re: Can I show my shoulders?
I am getting married at St. Demetrios in Merrick and they haven't said anything about to me about making sure my shoulders are covered. I think that you are technically not supposed to but these days with alot of brides wearing strapless dresses I think some churches don't mind. Which church are you getting married at?

Re: Can I show my shoulders?
I would contact your church. I think it varies from parish to parish, but one of my friends who got married (Catholic church) had to wear a shawl to cover her shoulders,

Re: Can I show my shoulders?
It definitely depends on the church and how strict the priests are there. I am getting married at St. Demetrios in Astoria and a strapless gown is ok.

If you do have to you can wear a shear shawl just for the ceremony and them take it off.

Re: Can I show my shoulders?
Thanks ladies, I guess I will check with my priest. I am getting married at a new church thjat is being built on 107, Church of the Resurrection. The priest will be the same one that married my parents in Broooklyn about 30 years ago!

Things have changed a bit. Some churches are not as strict. Def. check with your church.

It depends on the priest as well. You may have to get a shawl/wrap for the ceremony and then take it off for pics and such after the ceremony.
