can some please explain the deal with carbs?

can some please explain the deal with carbs?

I know they're 'bad' and lately they've become worse than fat but I'm so confused about what you should and shouldn't eat. (I still eat fruits and veggies - when I say carbs I mean the ones in bread, pasta, etc)

For instance, carbs give you energy, and you need that, so if you avoid carbs altogether, that's not good. But, those nutrition/protein bars out there now are LOADED with carbs - how does that help anyone dieting? Or are those bars now meant for dieters, but for more serious athletes?

I want to try and lose some weight but I'm so confused by all of thise

Teri, I can't really answer your questions because I'm definitely not an expert, but I am a 'carboholic', and would find it nearly impossible to eliminate all carbs, so what I did (before getting preggo) was eliminate all white flour, at my doctor's suggestion. That really helped me to stay on track.

there are lots and lots of different theories out there about carbs now and which ones are good which ones are bad. it's hard to keep track of them all! i might suggest reading up on the different diets that there are now - they generally explain how the body reacts to carbs and why they are positive or negative. it's completely up to the individual's body and no one is the same

ex: carrots are supposed to be a high carb veggie. i was on a low carb diet and had to stay away from them because my body treated them as a carb. my father, on the same diet could eat as many of them as he wanted and he was fine

good luck!!!!

It's all about good carbs vs. bad carbs. White pasta, flour, sugar, potatoes: these are all 'bad' carbs.

There are carbs, good carbs, in veggies like spinach, eggplant, broccoli, etc.. so your body IS getting carbs. A bowl of pasta will give you energy for 30 minutes- but you'll crash because your blood sugar level will dip afterwards.

Basically- you need to read about the science behind it- it's way to complicated for me to write it here :)

the good carbs are the natural carbs...carbs that are not processed...

the bad carbs are usually classified as white flour and white sugar...

if you only remember the golden rule in eating
NOTHING IS BAD FOR YOU IF DONE IN MODERATION
you'll be fine.

The bars are good if you work out on a regular basis and need the calories. Some are better than others in terms of low carbs.

You NEED to eat carbohydrates. Just eat one serving of a low glycemic carb for each meal, but eat protein too. eat whole grains in stead of enriched flour. If it says ENRICHED, don't buy it!!!!!
It will get stored as fat at a much quicker rate before you get a chance to burn it off.

The bst way to ease your carb mind is to exercise. If you are serious about loosing weight, than you NEED to exercsie, or you will go right back to where you were eventually.

I've been doing a lot of research...adn I have found also what Christine says...ENriched is a bad word...(who knew...its sounds good right?)

also there are simple carbs...sugar...which give you a boost of energy (which is good sometines) but then give you the sugar 'crash' although fruit fall into this category...fructose doesn't have as big of an effect on insulin levels...so it will not cause the extreme crash...

and complex carbs are your fibers, veggies, flours, etc...the more fiber...the longer it takes to burn them into the simple carbs...

so look for fiber...and stay away from enriched flour and too much sugar...
