Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

My FH and I are in the process of registering, and we don't want to request knives that just 'look nice'. Can anyone share which knife brand they registered for...I know, a lame question, but what can I do?

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

Definitely henkels, but make sure you get the four star or professional S series. Henkels makes different grades of knives. Wustoff trident makes good ones as well.
Don't bother with Hoffritz, they used to be fantastic but they sold their business to limetime hoan and the quality isn't there.
Hope this helps!

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

Thanks guys! One more question...
I just looked them up (Henckles) and they are soooo expensive...do you think people would actually spend that much for knives? Thanks!

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

Yes they are expensive. Totally worth it , you will never need another set of knives. Make sure you learn how to take care of them.
Maybe you could register for the knives seperately rather than as a set. I needed to add some to the set I already have and one has already come off my registry($89). If your store allows for exchanges you could exchange all the 'loose' knives you got for the set with the block. It's cheaper to buy as a set, but not many guests can afford such a generous gift.
Good luck!

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

We went with Wusthoff. A little more than henkels but we loved them. There was a woman in fortunoff at the time who explained all about knives to us and had us hold them the correct way to see which grip felt more comfortable. For us the Wusthoff won no contest. Try going to Fortunoffs and asking for help. The sales assistant who helped us was in her mid 20s. medium height and had brownish hair. She also had romanian like accent. Maybe they could help you decide. You really should pick them all up and see how the feel as everybody's grip is different. You may pick out something mroe expensive but remember people like to chip in for presents also!!!

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

People buy you anything off your registry! Go for them! Henkels has a great set that comes in a wooden block, I think its 4 steak knives and other cutting knives...and the wood block keeps them sharp. Bed Bath and Beyond has it for $99, of course they have better Henkels too for more money

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

Wow - I'm impressed at how much you guys know about knives...who would have 'thunk' it...heehee

Do you think it's alright if I register for the lower grade henkels steak knives (i really like the stainless steel ones that are $40 for 4 of them), then go for the professional grade ones for cutting, etc...??

Thanks again ladies!

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

I have to go with the others. Henkels are great. Also register for the Henkels poultry scissors. They work so good. Cutting chicken is so easy for me now.

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

There a poll on the Wedding Channel.com NY boards about these knives, and there is a pretty good explaination of Wustoff over Henkels.

We have Henkels and love them!!

Re: Can't believe I'm posting a knife question!!

I checked out the poll and wow can you believe the information there? Weird.. I remember being told all the pros of Wusthoff but completely forgot it all. I thought this was cute too as I had never heard it before...

one bride posted:

and don't forget to give the person that buys you knives a penny. Its a wives tale that if the are given cutlery as a gift it will cut your friendship. So if you give them a penny you are paying for the knives
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another bride responed:

I am laughing. Is this an Italian thing? We do the same thing, but my family says it is to protect the marriage. Knives as a wedding gift is supposed to cause strife in a marriage unless you 'pay' the giver for them!
