SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - Poor Ronald Duffy. First he couldn't get into Brazil. Now he can't get out. The 35-year-old Pennsylvania native was barred entry in the South American country after he threw water on a baby whose crying annoyed him on the long flight from Miami, police said on Thursday. Duffy, who had been planning to spend Carnival with his Brazilian girlfriend in the city of Salvador, was arrested by federal police at Sao Paulo international airport when the flight landed on Wednesday. 'I think I overreacted a little,' Duffy told Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper.
Police said Duffy appeared to be drunk on the flight. When the baby began to cry, he complained he could not sleep. He then asked for a glass of water and doused the toddler with it as the shocked parents watched.
The other passengers 'nearly lynched him' and applauded when police boarded the aircraft to arrest him, the newspaper said.
Duffy, who said he had been taking medicine to sleep, was supposed to fly back to the United States on Thursday morning. But the Varig flight he boarded brought him back to the gate before take-off after he 'acted up' again, police said.
'He behaved badly when he boarded the plane,' said police spokesman Wagner Castilho, without elaborating.
'He's still being held at the airport, but he'll definitely fly out tonight, even if he needs a police escort.'
TAM, the airline that took Duffy to Brazil, had refused to carry him back, a TAM spokesperson said.
Duffy is the second U.S. citizen this month to be barred entry in Brazil following a run-in with the police.
Two weeks ago an American Airlines pilot was arrested and fined almost $13,000 after making an obscene gesture while being photographed by immigration officials in Sao Paulo.
sometimes I feel the same way when there is a misbehaving child on the plane, but I control my urges!

Re: can ya blame him?
I don't have children yet, but my sister has travelled to Italy with her children twice. Prior to the flight, she spoke with the doctor to see how the flight could be as painless as possible for the children and other around them. The doctor suggested giving them a little children's benedryl. On both trips, her kids slept from takeoff until they landed 8 hours later. Plus, my sister made sure the children did not take naps before they left and flew in the evening (bedtime), so they were ready to sleep.
My point is that the man was terribly wrong and his behavior is inexcusable. People have every right to travel with their children if they so choose. However, I believe it is a parent's responsibility to do whatever they can do make the flight as painless as possible for themselves, their children and the other passengers.

Posted by OctGroom I have but one hope and dream for the man who struck his child.. I want him to live to a ripe old age.. and on his death-bed I want him to be alone unless he changes his ways.
Cruel? Perhaps.. but not as cruel as the pain and the hurt he caused a child.
You should see my mother (both for that matter).
I also hate to see the ones who let it go. I remember having lunch once and at the table beside us was a father and son. The table behind the father had a family.
The father of this family was cruel beyond belief to his children. NOne of our business right? Then he slapped his daughter and told his son to shut up. When the wife tried to protest he just looked at her. She shushed her children, but the boy wouldnt let up. He really got angry at his father for hitting his sister. Finally the mother agreed. THe guy got up and came around to the wife and pinched her hard and said to the kids 'We're leaving, now. Mom and I will be out in a second go outside'.
I felt horrified. I told the manager I thought the woman was in trouble. He said there was nothing he could do but call the cops and they'd be gone by then.
What got me was this... the man and his son.
The kid saw the whole thing. After I got back from telling the manager I heard the boy say 'Dad, how come that man is so mean?' and the father.... 'It's none of your concern, keep your eyes are your food. Some Mommys need to be spoken to by Daddys'
I nearly puked.. I had to leave. I got up and walked over to the kid and said 'No woman or child no matter what deserves to be abused. Never let anyone tell you different' The father got up and I said 'Go ahead and hit me, this woman won't fall that easy' My friend (who was having lunch with me) got up now all Seven feet of him and stood behind me 'I wouldnt advise that sir' I was so sick I had to leave. I cried the whole way to the car and couldnt stop while I drove home.
I hate abuse.. it's horrible. To allow it to go on so BLANTANTLY is terrible. To teach your child it's ok is CRIMINAL!
JMHO
Amen!
What a terrible story.... guys who do that are NOT men.. they are lower than dirt. They belong in the lowest level of hell. Seriously!

I never blame the child. I blame the parents. I refuse to take my child on an airplane at that age.. as said before, there's nothing they can do, it hurts their ears.
i think that's a bit judgemental. you may not have a reason to take a child on a plane but other people may. my family is in california and when i have a child I know I will be visiting there often with my child. Children may be annoying whether they're 5 months old or 5 years old, you never know. i would definitely always request a seat in the back of the airplane if i'm with my child, but i wouldn't avoid flying because it might annoy someone else. they should just be prepared and get some earplugs!
Kids is the reason I ALWAYS travel with earplugs. And really, the parents should think 2x before taking a kid on the plane! is it an emergency? Do you really need to subject your child as well as all the pasengers around your to a 6 hour torture? I personally think that children under 12 should not be allowed on planes, but that's too drastic of a measure to be implemented, so enter earplugs and headphone on top!
PLEASE TELL ME YOUR JOKING!!!! So what my life/vacations should stop until my child is 12?? I don't think so!!

I'll be honest, I cringe when I see a small child get onto the plane when I fly!
No one expects you to stay home till your child is able to fly comfortably, but it's human decency to be considerate of those around you. The general public doesn't have the same tolerance for your child that you do. A long flight is bad enough without a miserable baby or unruly child to contend with.
I can imagine it is as unpleasant for the child as it is for the passengers that have to listen to that child scream or deal with bad behaviour.

Wow! when some of you girls have children I would love to see your response to this thread.
If I had a $1.00 for everytime I said I wouldn't do that. I would be a very rich woman and my son is only 19 weeks old

Re: can ya blame him?
i dont agree with either side....
what the man did was un called for, he shouldnt have poured water on the baby...
however i think the airline should have separate flights for people with babies.. why should someone have to pay $200 for a seat to hear a piercing cry throughtout the flight(and possibly get a migraine headache)while the next flight may have no crying...why does 99% of the plane have to suffer when theyre paying so much money?? if the movies are starting to have certain showings when you can bring babies and not have to worry about crying, i think the airplane company should start that and there would be alot more happier people..
