SAO PAULO, Brazil (Reuters) - Poor Ronald Duffy. First he couldn't get into Brazil. Now he can't get out. The 35-year-old Pennsylvania native was barred entry in the South American country after he threw water on a baby whose crying annoyed him on the long flight from Miami, police said on Thursday. Duffy, who had been planning to spend Carnival with his Brazilian girlfriend in the city of Salvador, was arrested by federal police at Sao Paulo international airport when the flight landed on Wednesday. 'I think I overreacted a little,' Duffy told Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper.
Police said Duffy appeared to be drunk on the flight. When the baby began to cry, he complained he could not sleep. He then asked for a glass of water and doused the toddler with it as the shocked parents watched.
The other passengers 'nearly lynched him' and applauded when police boarded the aircraft to arrest him, the newspaper said.
Duffy, who said he had been taking medicine to sleep, was supposed to fly back to the United States on Thursday morning. But the Varig flight he boarded brought him back to the gate before take-off after he 'acted up' again, police said.
'He behaved badly when he boarded the plane,' said police spokesman Wagner Castilho, without elaborating.
'He's still being held at the airport, but he'll definitely fly out tonight, even if he needs a police escort.'
TAM, the airline that took Duffy to Brazil, had refused to carry him back, a TAM spokesperson said.
Duffy is the second U.S. citizen this month to be barred entry in Brazil following a run-in with the police.
Two weeks ago an American Airlines pilot was arrested and fined almost $13,000 after making an obscene gesture while being photographed by immigration officials in Sao Paulo.
sometimes I feel the same way when there is a misbehaving child on the plane, but I control my urges!

OMG that is insane. I would have beat the living crap outta him to. That is so uncalled for and ridiculous. He should have gotten a private jet if he wanted no babies on board.

I always feel so bad for babies when they fly. Their ears hurt and they don't know what else to do

The man would not be breathing!!!
I'm sorry but people have to realize flying on a plane is not really fun for children. Sometimes they are sick or in pain (their ears). That is just uncalled for!!!

totally out of line, but i've felt the same way sometimes. if i had the resources i'd start a child-free airline, no one under 16 allowed on board. ahhhhh, peace and quiet.

I would have been arrested for what I would do to that man if he did that to my child. Maybe he should take his private jet next time, then he won't have to worry about a public commute. A**hole!!

Re: can ya blame him?
I wonder tho.. what were the parents doing?
I say this because I got on a small paddle hopper in Saint Louis once.. and there was this couple...
Actually there was this lady with a baby and a small child (older than a tot) the little girl kept asking if she could open the windows. She was basically being a MAJOR pain!!! The mother kept trying to settle her down and at the same time keep a hold on her baby (remember this is one of those 20 passanger planes). The guy in the seat across the aisle looked annoyed and frankly we all were.
On and On and ON this went. The little girl would completely jealous of the baby and wanted the bottle. Once we got air born the baby was pacificed with the bottle and just to be MEAN the little girl took it from her... baby started to cry. The Mom took back the bottle and the little girl hit her and called her names and tried to 'open' the window. (this was before 9/11).
I was SO fed up. The screaming and crying and all I could think of was.. 'Poor woman'.. just then the man across the aisle says 'Shut her up!' I was shocked. But the woman replied 'Im trying I really am' and he told her 'Shut her up or I'll do it for you' now Im getting concerned a bit and so was Jim. The little girl (who had a window seat obviously) said 'I hate her.. she hates me' Then she crawled over her mother AND the baby (which made the baby cry MORE) and into the man's lap.
This man who hadn't said a word but negative remarks and HAD NOT helped was the FATHER!!!! I mean GEEZ that poor woman! I looked at Jim and said 'Id kill you if you did that to me..' How rude and idiotic is that?
For this story I wonder.. how did the man get that close? What were the parents doing? I'd be apologizing profusly if my child were that loud (First off I wouldnt fly with the baby unless necessary). I'd be terrified someone would be ready to stone me about this crying child... and Im sure I'd be looking around with a face that screamed out 'im sorry so sorry'.. how could this happen?
Makes you wonder ..
I never blame the child. I blame the parents. I refuse to take my child on an airplane at that age.. as said before, there's nothing they can do, it hurts their ears.

It can be annoying with children/babies on planes, but you know it is a possability every time you book.
THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO ASSAULT A CHILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it was my kid I would have been apologizing, but I tell ya, if someone did that to my child, or any child in front of me, I would have kicked his a$$, and God forbid someone did that in front of DH, forget it, I would be bailing him out of jail

i think that's a bit judgemental. you may not have a reason to take a child on a plane but other people may. my family is in california and when i have a child I know I will be visiting there often with my child. Children may be annoying whether they're 5 months old or 5 years old, you never know. i would definitely always request a seat in the back of the airplane if i'm with my child, but i wouldn't avoid flying because it might annoy someone else. they should just be prepared and get some earplugs!

Kids is the reason I ALWAYS travel with earplugs. And really, the parents should think 2x before taking a kid on the plane! is it an emergency? Do you really need to subject your child as well as all the pasengers around your to a 6 hour torture? I personally think that children under 12 should not be allowed on planes, but that's too drastic of a measure to be implemented, so enter earplugs and headphone on top!

I didn't mean it to be Judgemental but a personal opinion.. I wont take MY child on a plane. I fully plan on driving the 2 and a half day trek to my parents when (hopefully) I have children and before they are old enough to fly. I know sometimes it's necessary.. hence I said if it were me I'd feel so guilty that my child was causing trouble. Sometimes you HAVE to fly.. (can't drive to Europe) but you (as your post implie) would take steps.
I wouldnt suggest not flying to avoid annoying others.. Heck you pay for the flight it's your time, you dime.. I said *I* as in my own personal opinion wouldnt fly because it was annoy my CHILD. then again.. i Have no children, prehaps I'll change my tune.. but I couldn't imagine seeing my nephew screaming in a plane so young.. it would be heartbreaking!
Never meant to imply that flying with kids is stupid or somehow insane or bad parenting.. stuff happens.. Im just saying if it could be avoided.. I, personally, would avoid it.

How about blaming the man who basically assaulted the baby. This is an adult who should have control over himself and his actions, unlike babies. Personally, given the choice I would rather fly with a plane full of screaming babies, than an adult with absolutly no control over himself.

Re: can ya blame him?
If ANYBODY EVER did that to my kid, you would have to peel me off him. I'm not the biggest, most physically imposing man who ever lived, but I think when pissed off, I can put up a good fight.
It reminds me of an awful stroy I remember from the summer... I went with my FW to see her BIL and her sister at a park. He plays Sunday baseball... which thought would be cool.. but these guys on the other team where a-holes. Total a-holes. These were the type of guys that you wouldn't mind hearing that they were struck by lighting after being run over by a herd of elephants while they were lying face-down in a 2 foot pool of sulfuric acid as a school of piranhas went to work on the area where their genitals would be located.
In other words.. they were the worst of humanity. (I really did not like them.. Can you tell? haha)
Anyways... after cursing and crying like babies the whole game, one of the guy's kids knocks over a cooler. The guy sees his kid do this.. he picks up his baseball glove and throws it, and hits the kid right in the face with it as hard as he can. Kid starts crying runs to his 'mother'.. or probably some stupid, spineless GF the father is 'doing' on the side and he tells the kid, he's a little B---- and it's gonna get much worse later that night.
My FW and I were sick. We left soon after that. That guy (and his whole team) ruined a perfect summer afternoon out for us....
I have but one hope and dream for the man who struck his child.. I want him to live to a ripe old age.. and on his death-bed I want him to be alone unless he changes his ways.
Cruel? Perhaps.. but not as cruel as the pain and the hurt he caused a child.
Hope this wasn't too much of a rant.
You know I think very highly of you all!

Oh yeah.. that bast*rd would fry.
I pushed a lady who dared to shove my brother once. You think I'd just sit there if my kid were doused with water?? It goes without saying I'd be arrested too.

Cruel? Perhaps.. but not as cruel as the pain and the hurt he caused a child.
You should see my mother (both for that matter).
I also hate to see the ones who let it go. I remember having lunch once and at the table beside us was a father and son. The table behind the father had a family.
The father of this family was cruel beyond belief to his children. NOne of our business right? Then he slapped his daughter and told his son to shut up. When the wife tried to protest he just looked at her. She shushed her children, but the boy wouldnt let up. He really got angry at his father for hitting his sister. Finally the mother agreed. THe guy got up and came around to the wife and pinched her hard and said to the kids 'We're leaving, now. Mom and I will be out in a second go outside'.
I felt horrified. I told the manager I thought the woman was in trouble. He said there was nothing he could do but call the cops and they'd be gone by then.
What got me was this... the man and his son.
The kid saw the whole thing. After I got back from telling the manager I heard the boy say 'Dad, how come that man is so mean?' and the father.... 'It's none of your concern, keep your eyes are your food. Some Mommys need to be spoken to by Daddys'
I nearly puked.. I had to leave. I got up and walked over to the kid and said 'No woman or child no matter what deserves to be abused. Never let anyone tell you different' The father got up and I said 'Go ahead and hit me, this woman won't fall that easy' My friend (who was having lunch with me) got up now all Seven feet of him and stood behind me 'I wouldnt advise that sir' I was so sick I had to leave. I cried the whole way to the car and couldnt stop while I drove home.
I hate abuse.. it's horrible. To allow it to go on so BLANTANTLY is terrible. To teach your child it's ok is CRIMINAL!
