Dh and I are traveling back to the NE this weekend and we have a few small gifts for his family that are wrapped that would most likely be in our checked luggage do we have to unwrap them. Oh, dammit I just realized I got my FIL a desk dart set that's so gonna set off alarms I guess I will have to unwrap that one.. What has everyone heard?

I am pretty sure they would recommend not packing wrapped gifts. I doubt regular presents would set off any alarms but bags are randomly searched and they may rip them open. The darrts should definitely be checked and unwrapped.

The darts will be a given, don't wrap them. I agree the rest should be fine.
I'd only suggest you prepare yourself for rewrapping if necessary. Just to be safe.
Mostly I send gifts I dont want mangled via postal service, in today's day it's SO much easier.

you can check wrapped gifts in your suitcase.. we dis this two weeks ago and we were fine... you can not carry them on wrapped ...

I'm sure its hit or miss...if they are already wrapped then just hope for the best and be prepared to buy some wrapping paper when you get there

FI works as TSA and straight from his lips, DO NOT wrap gifts.
The dart set as long as its in your CHECKED luggage you shouldnt have any problems.
DO NOT LOCK your luggage. TSA WILL BREAK THE LOCK!!! If a bag is locked it looks more suspicious and TSA IS NOT responsible for damaged luggage. DO NOT lock your luggage.
If your bag gets searched, TSA will put a note in your bag saying they opened it for security reasons and they will also wrap your bag up in tape.

Our bag was searched when we came back from vacation. There was a letter in the bag and they wire tied the zipper. Same thing when my mother came back from Florida
I would be really angry if they taped up my bag - I am sure it would be nearly impossible to remove it.

We went to FL with a huge rubbermaid bin and the bin was opened. We had the plastic ties on it and some plastic tape on it as well.
I think it depends on the type of item (luggage, bin, etc...) if they use tape to seal it. Its not like duct tape, but that plastic type tape you would use when you mail something priority mail. Its not hard to remove.
