YES!

I've had a lot of luck negotiating, espeically since I've left some things longer than I should have.

We just decided that we wanted a videographer, and we called around to a bunch of places. I basically said, 'look, it's 2 months until my wedding day, and you're not booked. Can you give me $XXX amount off?'

And much more often than not, they did!

I'm not sure if this tactic will work for you, but it never ever hurts to ask!

a little- i was able to negotiate with the reception stuff and the site fee for the ceremony...everything else was not really negotiable in our experience.

is it best to negotiate in person or on the phone?

We went to see a vendor this past saturday and really liked them, but they are very popular and are basically booked every weekend (our date is still free)... FI said we won't have any luck negotiating with them due to their popoularity.

Should I bother to try? Over the phone? See them in person again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Can you negotiate with vendors?

I negotiated everything and almost every vendor was willing to work with me. A friend of mine and her husband paid for everything themselves and she was so stressed out she started crying to a vendor, he imediately gave her a discount!

we are paying for everything ourselves too and I am at that point of wanting to cry!!

I think we have a pretty good budget already, but I never expected how much everything can cost and how many things we need!

Tell them you would like to book them today but you are stuck on the price and then leave it in their court. If they are a reasonable reputable vendor, they will do something.

you can start the negotiation over the phone, I did and was successful. if you're flexible, you can get VERY GOOD DEALS!!

I prefer to negotiate in person, but I'm sure you can do it over the phone too. Some vendors might want to give you quotes in person though.

Definitely negotiate everything... even if they are a popular vendor. It never hurts to try.

Everything is Negotiatable! Even if they are not flexable on the price, they might throw in some extras. For example, if your photographer will not come down on the price, maybe they will stay for unlimted hours instead of an 8 hour day. Talk to them and see what you can figure out that will leave you both happy in the end.

Yes. Everything is negot. My photog. has published prices, though and he does not negotiate but he was fair.

I negotiated with every single vendor. Play hard ball - it works.

Also first pose the question, will you do it for X dollars. If they say no then say what if I am willing to give up X(pasta station, 1 passed appetizer. This is what I did. I negotiated for an all inclusive price per person and excluded the pasta station.

Yes you can, but don't do it unless you are ready to book. I work for a wedding vendor, and it is very inappropriate to haggle and then say 'I'll think about it.'

And if you can't get $$$ off, ask for things to be thrown in, sometimes that works better....

ETA

It's always best to negotiate anything in person....you never know whos on the other end of the phone...

oh I absolutely agree!! I would not try to haggle if I am not 100% interested. I actually call the vendor I had in mind today and negotiated! I am happy to report that it was successful and we are ready to sign next week, I am going to try to talk them into some more extras before I sign.

I don't know why I was so nervous, I negotiated with Fox Hollow and got what I wanted. I just wasn't sure if it's consider tacky if I haggle with the vendor, but you girls are right, it never hurt to try!
