Canceling Wedding in Nassau County
Due to circumstances outside of our control, my fiancé and I decided to cancel our wedding venue and opt for a small wedding somewhere else. So far we have only paid our first deposit, which we are content with losing. However, the venue is telling us that we are liable for 50% of the total contract, or if someone else books our date for less people then we are liable for the difference between our contract and their contract. They told us to write a letter releasing our date, but we do not feel comfortable releasing the date before we work something out with them. We are giving them almost a years notice, and don't want to wait a year to see if someone else books the venue. I know that Suffolk County has a law that pertains to this, but Nassau County doesn't. We aren't sure if the venue is just trying to scare us into sticking with the wedding, or if they would really sue us for 50% of the contract. We are hoping they will agree to just keep our deposit and agree not to come after us for the 50%.Has anyone ever heard of a venue suing a couple who backed out of their contract?

I have heard of this.... thats why they recommend wedding insurance. It covers that. FH and I did not get that and are now going through with the big wedding when we really just want to elope and avoid all the craziness that is involved. We already paid out half of our contract for the venue and left deposits for everything else. :( I am sorry. Sometimes I hear they will refund you if they book your date.... this might be your best bet. Good luck!

Some bride might buy the contract from u if ur losing the deposit anyways it would save her some extra $ post it on wedding websites the price per person/venue/what u get/date this way you only lose ur deposit and the venue gets a wedding

That is absolutely ridiculous. I had a situation happy to me in Suffolk county and all I lost was 500.00. Read your contact and make sure you understand what you signed! There is no reason so lose all that money! I'm so sorry this is happening to you!Welcome New Vendors
