cancelling RH

cancelling RH

what are the laws for nassau county? a reception hall with the initials AW is literally harassing my sister calling her at work and home and from collection agencies saying she owes them money...she sent them a letter cancelling a few days before her 1 yr mark...she didn't ask for her deposit back...they have her deposit and are still harassing her. my sis had to get a lawyer but the calls won't stop. They had better back off before i take a trip there myself.

ETA: no offence to girls getting married there...but for how they handled this situation...I'm glad my sis didn't get married there.

I belive she owes them the full amount
there really isnt any protections for that in nassau that I am aware of and she is responsible for the full amount

she might actually owe them money. It depends whether or not they booked another event for that date, if they did then she gets everything back except $1000...and even if they book another date, it has to be of equal or greater value of what she would've been paying...so either they didn't book and she might be held responsible, or if they booked another event but it is of lesser value then she might owe the difference

my rh is in nassau, and i summarized what the contract says but basically what it comes down to

I think in Nassau County it depends on the specific RH's policy.
I was originally booked at a RH and they gave me back my deposit when I canceled but I know most of the ones I spoke to required the date to be rebooked otherwise you owed the full amount.

I just don't understand how 1 yr wasn't enough notice. spit happens. she had only payed an initial deposit to book the date but no payments. Their initial reaction to her cancelling was so nasty and defensive that even that made her feel like she shouldn't get married there because they might try to ruin her day. I'm so glad she went with swan club instead. as a catering hall owner I'd be embarassed to admit that my RH couldn't book an event during the busiest time of yr with 1 yr notice. Her lawyer has asked them to provide their schedule book to prove they had not rebooked it...but I mean ...how solid is evidence provided by the people seeking money??

It depends on what her contract said. What were the terms regarding cancellation?

I dunno, she told me a bit about whats going on and i thought it was a dead situation but after speaking to my mom earlier today she tells me the situation has progressed and they are harassing her with phone calls at work

She can go to justask.com and they will answer a very detailed question for her. The cost is anywhere from $9 to $30. They helped FBIL on a divorce question....he was his own 'representative' instead of having a lawyer, and the advice they gave him helped him win his case.

I just don't understand why the laws in Suffolk and Nassau are so different. I wonder if there is a NY state law that over rules them?

awesome! thank you for the info. I just feel so bad that as a newlywed couple they have to deal with this.
