We would like a bit of everything...... active stuff (ruin tours, horseback riding, scuba, etc.) as well as beach, some nightlife... which has a better mix?
I think Riviera Maya will be much nicer for you. I've only been to Cancun...and it will always remind me of Spring break. I think Riviera Maya is nicer, cleaner and a better honeymoon location
Riviera Maya is geared more towards couples and the resorts are much nicer than in Cancun. Riviera Maya is about a 1/2 hour from Cancun so you can still take a trip there...most hotels offer transportation. I stayed at the Paradisus and it was amazing and the food was sooo good. I hear really good things about the Excellence as well.
Riviera Maya....
We were in Riviera Maya last Decembe and it was gorgeous. I think Cancun is more for sring break. There is also lots to do there they have a strip on 5th Avenue with tons of stores, bars and restaurants. It was awesone. We even swam with dolphins. We stayed at Xcaret Grand Flamenco and it has an ecological park which you get to go in once for free.
I like Riviera Maya better because it's not as developed so you can feel like you're somewhere tropical, but you're still close enough to Cancun to be able to go there to shop or enjoy the night life. We stayed at the Excellence Riviera Maya, which was only about 20 or 30 minutes from Cancun. We took a couple of trips into Cancun, and while there's a lot to do there, it was pretty much just one gigantic hotel after another. I would say it depends on what is more important to you, having plenty to do right outside of your hotel, or having a more relaxing, tropical atmosphere. You can still do all of the same tours and activities in either place because most hotels have tour and travel agents available where you can book the excursions you want to do.
For a honeymoon I'd recommend Riviera Maya. You will be close enough to the strip in Cancun to be able to travel there. You will want the seclusion from the craziness of the strip. It will be calmer and more couply in riviera maya. You will most likely get more partiers in Cancun.
