working on a limited budget and am not a huge flower person anyway, so i was thinking of using candles as centerpeices. anyone know of any wholesale places or rental companies i can get either hurricane candleholders or candleabras from?

We use Quick Candles for all that sort of stuff. They have the best prices that I've seen and they ship fast.

First check with your hall that you can do this.
As for Hurricanes you can buy them inexpensively at places like Michaels.
