CANstruction - it's interesting!

Every year my firm HLW International does a design competition in NYC called Canstruction. We build structures out of cans of food and compete with other design firms. At the end, all the food that was used gets donated to a local food bank in NYC for them to distribute to those who need it.

This years competition had over 36 entries ranging from a Snowman to the Brooklyn Bridge to the Leaning Tower of Pisa to a Hot Dog with Mustard and Ketchup.

Our entry was called Green Eggs and Ham from the Dr. Seuss book. We built the actual ham and eggs on a plate.

If anyone is interested in going to see these structures live, they are at:
The NY Design Center
200 Lexington Avenue, corner of 33rd St.

The exhibits will be up from November 11th thru November 24th, including Saturdays from 9am-5pm.

Admission is a can of food if you can spare it.
You will receive a paper with all the structures listed so you can work your way from the top of the building down.

What happens if somebody accidently bumps into it. How is it held together? IS there a dominoo effect?

Vicki, I love Canstruction! My old firm won judges choice 2 years ago.

It really cool to see what all these people can do with the cans!

Its totally worth seeing if you have the time!

Well, if someone touches it too hard, it can fall down. Really only if someone falls into it or intentionally pushes it over. Most people are pretty good about just looking and not touching.

The cans are held together with some packing tape. Actually ours has very little packing tape involved in it at all this year. What holds it all together is the pressure of the cans themselves. Part of the rules is that you cannot use anything structurally supporting to the cans. So it's packing tape, double sided tape and rubberbands if you need them!
