Car Insurance Payments

Car Insurance Payments

We have one car and live in Queens, we pay $3000 a year for it, b/c of points. I think if we buy another car it's supposed to be b/t $5000-$6000 for insurance It's not even a new car, a 1997 Cavalier. Aren't these rates crazy?!?!
Is this normal or are everyone's rates this high?

You know mine Nina, remember our conversation in my car?

Re: Car Insurance Payments

wow! can you take a defensive driving class to get some points off?

I would shop around. I lowered my insurance rates 4 times within the first 6 months of having my car - wound up to be less than half what I was originally paying. I think I pay $800 now (for a 99 Cabrio) and Al's car is $1500 or so (he had an accident recently - his fault, so it jacked up the price - 99 subaru).

Mind you, these are San Francisco rates. Don't know how they compare to queens, but we are paying a premium because we are within the city itself.

My hubby deals with insurance all the time for Queens drivers (his dealership is in Queens). Rates are extraordinarily high there. It's just the area you live in. Trying getting rates from other companies. He thinks Gieco is good. Also, take a defensive driving course to get rid of any points you may have.

I'm in Nassau County. I am currently leasing a 2003 Pontiac Vibe and pay $1200 a year. I have $1000 deductibles. That lowers your cost somewhat (as opposed to a $250 or $500 deductible).

I had a 1995 Toyota Corolla and was paying $800 a year.

move to Florida, when I moved here and got car insurance they said $600/year..I nearly fell off the chair and I up graded my coverage!! NY insurance rates are crazy, I feel for you. I use to pay over 6k for my car, some BS about it being a highly stolen car?

DEFINETELY check out GEICO! They have awesome rates and give free quotes over the phone. They gave FH & I amazing rates for adding him on my policy as a primary driver on one car & for full coverage on a brand new car!

Re: Car Insurance Payments

Please check out Geico. FH recently bought a new car and while we were looking for insurance companies he kept telling me to check Geico and I refused b/c they had given me a very high rate a few years back (I have no points and have never gotten a ticket-knock on wood. LOL). SO I finally gave in and called. I was paying $1,200 a year for my 1994 Nissan Sentra with Traveler's. Geico gave me a quote of $270 every 6 months. Needless to say I switched IMMEDIATELY. They're saving over $600 a year And that's with FH on my policy as a driver. We also insured his new car (2003 maxima) under my policy (with him as a driver also) and the new car is $1600 a year, but that's with full coverage and a whole bunch of other coverage I added. Plus, they told me that we would get another discount once we get married.

Re: Car Insurance Payments

Well, I guess it is Queens b/c those prices ARE from Geico!

We both are going to enroll in defensive driving classes. I'm trying to look at the positive side, at least DH's car is paid off, and we'll be buying a 2001 car from a friend with only 20K miles, so we'll only have one car payment and will make up the difference by paying high insurance

I also have Geico for my 2000 Grand-am and am paying 139/month (and that's w/out defensive driving).

Re: Car Insurance Payments

We have 2 cars and pay about 4K/Year with Geico. Both are new and one is a high performance car so we pay at least $500/year extra for that. I'm pretty happy with those rates given the cars we have.

Also, when I added DH to my insurance 2 years ago, my rates didn't go up despite the fact that he had a few accidents and tickets.

DH was in an accident last year that was over 5K in damage. The accident was not his fault and they didn't raise our rates (yet). I'm knocking on wood that they won't. Actually, the rates went down this year.

You should definately shop around. Different insurance companies price policies differently so you should call them all and get quotes. You might be surprised. My parents live in Brooklyn and Geico was very expensive when they checked. They actually ended up with Travelers.

By the way - I also live in Queens.

Good luck with your insurance hunt and let us know what you find.

Incidentally, I am looking to add a jewelry rider to my homeowners policy - and I've gotten outrageous prices. Anyone get a good rate for that? Anyone do pricing analysis recently on Homeowners Insurance that can share their experience?

Re: Car Insurance Payments

Nina I live in Queens too and have only liability on one of the cars and yes the insurance is about $1800 a year and YES I shopped around (I worked in the industry for 10 years) and it is HIGH because of my lovely husband's points!!!!

He got caught going a 140 miles an hour in a 55 mile an hour zone......oh yea he didn't think it would count if he was on his bike,

I will have to take the defensive driving class as well, maybe we can kill it together since we both live in Queens.

Re: Car Insurance Payments

I had insurance through One Beacon for my 2001 VW Passat with full coverage it was something like $2800 a year. I just check out Geico and Progressive and their rates were something like $1100 for a year!!! I just called my insurance co to see why and what they can do for me... if they cant match it... IM SWITCHING!!!

Re: Car Insurance Payments

Nina, have you thought about increasing the amount of your deductible. I keep mine at $500. This brings the rates down dramatically. Someday I will increase it to $1,000. But for right now, $500 is about all I can handle if I needed to make a claim.

Nubride - 144 in a 55 That is why I am too afraid to let my FH get a bike. I would be worried sick that he was zipping around that fast.

Re: Car Insurance Payments

I also use GEICO and I think their rates are very resonable. Last week I had my FH call to see what the price of his car insurance will be when he moves into my place in Westchester and we were happy to find out it is going to drop over $1000 a year. More money towards the house!

I live in Queens too, and we also have a 1997 Chrysler Concorde. We went with GEICO and it was $810 for the year for General Liability. If we went with Collision and theft it would of been $1600. Hope this helps!!

Re: Car Insurance Payments

I don't understand why it's so high for us. DH has been the one handling this and he says it't he best rate he can get. The last 2 years it was also about $3000 for just his one car. I'm not sure about the deductible, but I know at one point he took off fire and theft.

I guess it's b/c DH has 3 seatbelt tickets and a couple of accidents and something else. He uses his car all day long for work to go from job to job, so he has more opportunities to get tickets and into accidents. His job pays him a daily rate for using the car but that only covers gas.

Re: Car Insurance Payments

Oh yeah, Nina, that will do it. Accidents and tickets are very expensive. My FH has one accident and one ticket. His ins is $2100 for the year as opposed to my $900. Unfortunately, only time will take care of that. Unless there are some programs he qualifies for that Geico offers rebates to. ie., I get a MD State Bar Assoc member rebate.

Re: Car Insurance Payments

I live in Queens also (Bayside). So the prices that I wrote above are Queens prices. But tickets will bring the price way up. Have you tried being put as the primary driver on the cars and your DH as a driver under your policy?
