Car question

My car is getting work done right now.

On Friday I had to drive it on E because I didn't realize when I drove it to the city to work that it was only 1/4 full and by the time I realized there was no gas station near me on the parkway driving home. I made it to a gas station thankfully but I think dirt from the bottom of the gas tank got into the engine from it being on Empty. So yesterday I was on L.I. and the car was bucking, and the engine light came on. So FH brought it to a station he has been to before in O'side and luckily the manager said he'd come in today and work on it. He just called FH and said a cylinder is missing (it's not missing per se, but it's not working..'missing' is the term they use I guess) and that has to be fixed or replaced and he's going to run fuel injection through the car to get the dirt out. The cost?
$400!!!!

Is that alot? I can't do anything about it now. FH called me (I'm at work now) and said that we could have called AAA and have them tow it to my own mechanic in the Bronx. However, doesn't AAA have contracts with certain towing co's (like Don Glo) and they only have certain contracts to bring it to certain garages? That's why I said just have the guy work on it now.
Besides, he came in especially to work on it, so I feel a bit obliged to let him fix it and get paid for it. And maybe he charges double for working on a Sunday. I should have thought about this last night but it was 6pm and we weren't sure exactly (but had a good idea) what was wrong with the car at the time.

Just wondering if anyone has had something similar done and if they think I'm being overcharged.

ETA: turns out the spark plug is ripped. And need a tune up. MIght as well get it done now.

Re: Car question

not sure what you did

DH seems to think it is a bit high...that maybe you could first run the fuel injection cleaner yourself...which could attempt to clean it out...and spark plugs are not very expensive

could labor prices be higher on Sunday?

Re: Car question

Ok the 'dirt' you describe on the bottom of your gas tank is just sludgy residue or 'impurities' that linger in the bottom of any fuel tank... it could very well have been sent thru and clogged your fuel injectors... a cleaning on a 4 cyl. engine should be no more than 50.

A spark plug misfiring is simple to replace. A tune up can run you some bucks, but certainly not 400. Depending on your car, you may not need a full tune and may only need to replace the spark plugs.

For more info, I need to know the year, make and model of your car and how many miles you have on it.

P.S. The dealership will always charge you an arm and a leg. FM me if want to talk more about this.
